5 1/4 Speakers fit in the front?
I thought stock was 5 1/4? Got that in mine and also a set of aftermarket ones also, but I did have to cut out the back of the basket to make it fit because of the larger magnet.
I got 6 1/2's in mine. Where can I mount rear speakers in my DX hatch?
I have 6.5 in the front, I'll double check tomorrow.
i have 6" in the doors and the window will only roll down a little over half way. Its cool because I never roll them down all the way anyway.

they fit fine, the screws didnt match up properly though.
the components sound great as long as you have a decent amp on them.

technine is right, depends on the magnet. The book says 6 1/2 but I once put a 6 1/2 speaker made by bazooka and had to take em off because magnet was too big. I have 6 1/2 a/d/s separates now and it fits well. Only mod I did was replace the mounting bracket to match the holes...but same size.

By the way, in case your wondering, the factory rear speaker wires are tied back by the taillight wires behind the little covers in each corner of the hatch... Red and brown on the right (red positive) and blue and grey on the left (blue positive)
As for the original question, 5.25" speakers will work, but the hole is designed for 6", that means there will be an air gap around the speaker robbing you of almost all of your lower frequencies. one way around this is to take out the stock plastic spacer and build a new spacer out of 1/2" MDF. Cut the outside to the same dimensions as the plastic spacer, and make the inside hole the proper size for your 5.25's. You will need to paint the MDF or even better, coat it with fiberglass resin to waterproof it.

just cut out the stock baskets and mount the 6.5"s to it. you need the spacing and vibration dampening from the basket, otherwise you will have window issues.
