Default is my tranny toast?

Hey guys, this might have been a problem that's been discussed but I cant seem to find one similar to mine.
I have a 1991 Civic hatchback dx
It is a non vtec with an automatic transmission.
Here's the deal: the car starts and drives great, transmission will shift great and hold power... for around 2 miles, then (once transmission gets warmed up), it starts to slip and will not hold any power without slipping.
If you let it sit and cool down, it will work perfect again til it warms up.
Trans fluid is topped up, and not a bad color (red, but approaching red-brown).
are the clutch packs toast?
Thanks

could be anything in there really, but working until it gets warm makes me think of something along the lines of a torque conv.

ever thought of converting to a 5spd? (or 4spd std)

can pick up a good 88-91 tranny around here for $50-$100 (just watch out for 88's with a different clutch)

I think that it's clutch packs because if it were torque converter wouldnt it shudder/vibrate terrible? But that's why I am asking others advice

I've considered a 5spd swap but I need shifter, pedals, clutch, cv's and a computer correct? It's more complication than I want right now. I want to get it operable and sell it as is.
Thanks for the reply

The transmission is probably toast, but first try doing three drain and refill cycles with Honda ATF.

Have you tried to adjust the shift cable, if you tighten it some it will shift firmer.

My shifter seems to be fine? It shifts into reverse neutral d4 d3 and d2 just fine it's just that once the Trans "warms up" it begins to slip. It's probably toast. I don't wanna waste the money on all that ATF, I tracked down a use tranny I'm gonna throw in.
