So my parents are in the market for a new car, I suggested looking into a hybrid for its amazing mpg. I've just spent and hour reading customer reviews on the 06+ civic hybrids and most owners seems to be happy with them, however a few did mention poor mpg.
My question is do the Honda hybrids have any common problems with there systems? I would appreciate any information from a hybrid owner on overall cost to own and if any major repairs were needed? Also any help on deciding which is a better choice; Honda or Toyota is greatly appreciated. My main concern is reliability and mpg.

 

i work for honda. the only time i see those civic hybrids in the shop are for regular maintenance and for ima batteries which btw are almost always covered by warranty. they have something like 10 year 100,000 mile warranty or something like that (dont quote me). but ive yet to see one undergo any serious repairs

having owned both a hybrid and a lx, the hybrid cvt tranny is a POS. Also, the battery replacements are + $2000 and most of the time they fail after the warranty is over.
check out the above website and you'll see all the problems with a civic hybrid. i'll never get a hybrid again.

 

buttt you have a 2003 Hybrid CVT. Sure the early ones may of had some issues but i feel sure the 2008+ models are more solid once the technology was learned out and had some age on it just as with any new tech or system.

Personal experience: My mom bought an 08 Hybrid. Only issue it had was in the extreme heat of the summer the batteries seemed to be weaker than they should be. never left her, never give her any "Trouble" otherwise a great car and averaged 45 mpg mixed driving.

Im actually on here searching for info because I am also in the market for a used Civic Hybrid and looking for info before I make a move.

 

Coworkers wouldn't make it up a steep driveway, all passengers had to get out and he needed a running start...yea no thanks. If i was to ever buy a hybrid it would be a prius, civic is too usless with non-folding rear seats.

190k on 2004 so far 1-cvt shudder at low rpm 2-IMA light on since 180k, still getting 42 mpg 3- emission light on when IMA light started, exhaust stinks at idle probable cat getting clogged. 0 dollars for repairs other than tires-oil/filters.

 

Ok people, we are talking about the new civic Hybrids. the older ones of course are going to have more problems than the current model. That being said, I work for honda and most every newer hybrid is just as reliable as the standard civic. There are battery failures once in a while but I haven't seen a customer pay IMA on a 06-up hybrid yet.

But, with the added cost of the hybrid the mileage won't justify the added price over a regular civic unless you drive the car to almost 200,000 miles.

 

That's a outright lie. A Civic hybrid has more inital TQ than a regular civic and can go up any incline. I drove a 09 quite a long time. Unless your coworkers are 300lbs each and you're in a 03 hybrid with a dead IMA that's just bs.

 

No it isn't, but I have nothing to prove to anyone. It was a 06-07. We both work at a honda dealership.
