Default Removing cheap paint from a car that was repainted

I bought a car to experiment with which was silver. The original owner did a black exterior paint job so the door jams, engine bay, trunk etc are still silver. Its bad condition, chipping and peeling everywhere. Looking where its chipping it doesnt look like it was prepped at all since the silver paint is glossy. Body is in great condition.

What would be the best way to remove the black paint from the car? I have a d/a sander with 120, 220, 320, 400.

yea, just take apart anything close to the loose black paint because with that DA youll be there for hours and you'll never get a flat surface with that DA. Also keep in mind this aircraft paint remover would take off the original silver also.

Remember silver shows scratches easily so dont shoot paint over anything in the 600- range.

(pics would help)

Ive used aircraft stripper before, plenty of time on wheels. But just to remove the black paint and get down to the original primer or get enough silver off so it can be repainted silver? So basically either spend a few days sanding it and fixing low and high spots. or just strip down to the metal?

a thin layer af air craft paint remover will not take it down to bare metal. it may not even get all the black off. I would just put a layer of stripper on and see how much it takes off, then apply another if needed, and sand down the silver and prep for paint

Do you know what kind of paint the black was? because with some types of paint you can use Easy Off oven cleaner but don't leave it on to long or it can start to remove the silver. I have removed cheap paint like this before works great on painted pin striping.
