Default Trickle Charging Through Cigarette Lighter

Guys,

I just acquired several foldable solar panels that were originally meant to charge an Iridium Satellite phone. I am hoping to repurpose them and use one to trickle charge my car battery while I am away in Afghanistan. Is it possible to trickle charge the battery through the cigarette lighter of a 2001Honda Civic? I know you can trickle charge a car through the cigarette lighter on any car that keeps the circuit connected when the key is not in the ignition and not in the "On" position. If I were back in the states I would test by taking the key out of the ignition and testing to see if the cigarette lighter still worked. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

This will not work.
You are better off connecting the solar panel directly to the battery.

I've been down this road before.

Why are you so concerned about having the battery trickle charging when you are away? How long do you plan on being gone, that could be a lot of not needed charging? Why not disconnect the battery before you leave?

I don't think it'll work on the Civic since power to the lighter goes off when ignition switch is set to OFF. Which means it is disconnected from the battery.
