95 Del Sol/98 B18C1 GS-R swap/B16 Trans - fuel economy and transmission issues
I have a 1995 Del Sol with a 1998 B18C1 GS-R engine swap and a B-16 Trans. It came already swapped when I bought it. I was told that the engine swap was done with full wiring, along with fuse block, relay box and computer. Has H22 injectors w/ vision fuel pressure regulator with gauge & is adjustable. Has Blox Cold Air Intake with Skunk2 intake manifold. Has Header and full 2 1/4 " exhaust installed. Flashed & recurved ECM with 2 step launch control.
I am having 2 different problems, one is fuel economy. It sucks at low 20's. Second is that 3rd gear synchronizer is going out. I want to put a different trans in that would give me better highway mpg. and that would take care of both problems at once... Do you have any advice on it for me.
I am new to Honda and this is my first one. I am a former Ford man. I like this car alot but figured if I was gonna replace the trans anyway, I might as well do what I want with it. I hate the high RPM on the highway...
Thanks in Advance...

Any CELs? Does the CEL come on when you turn the car on? What are the condition of the Rotor/Cap/spark plug wires/plugs?
By the way, the high RPM on the highway with that motor/transmission set up seems normal. 70 MPH should put you at almost 4000 RPM, since the engine redlines at about 8100 RPM.
Since you're having issues with the syncros, you can either have it rebuilt of course, or find another transmission. The B16A2 Transmission code is Y21 if i remember correctly. If you wanted to put the one that originally comes with the B18C1, then find one with the Transmission code of Y80.
So it is normal for those to run at that RPM. WOW...
There are no CEL's at all. The car runs great. It does seem to run a little rich, but at least I can adjust that fairly easily... I am just not used to such high RPM's at highway speeds. I have noticed that it has a high idle until it warms up, (around 1650 rpm's) then that goes away as well. Is that normal for the B18C1? I will upload pics in the near future. This is going to become a project I do believe...

What kind of ecu is it running? Tuneable or just running a chipped ecu? My chipped p28 ran my GSR great too but bad gas mileage. Bought and swapped to a p72 and it ran the same but mpgs went from avg about 20-24 to 26+
I was told it was tuneable by the previous owner, but to be honest, I am not 100% sure... As I said this is my first Honda ever, so I am learning as I go... I just hope I learn Honda faster than I did Ford...lol
If you like the shorter gears except on the highway you could have the transmission rebuilt with a GSR or LS 5th. Grinding when shifting(worn/bad syncros) are quite common in Honda transmissions too. If you buy another transmission used be weary if purchasing from an individual

Get stock injectors (OBD1 Civic injectors except for CX/VX are 240CC the same as a GS-R and are way easier to find), stock FPR and a stock ECU.
The grind is probably from a worn 3rd/4th sleeve and hub, possibly 3rd gear itself has worn engagement teeth as well. You're probably better off to rebuild the transmission you have now then to buy another one that may be in worse shape than what you have.

Agree with all of the above..... Time to rebuild tranny, replace the synchros with carbon coated synchros, and an Integra LS 5th gear.
This will make the freeway driving more pleasant, and you will still have the torquey pull in the first four gears.

Sounds like some very good advice. I will keep you posted as to what I do... I will post some pictures on here as soon as I figure out how to do it...
