Looking at purchasing a Del Sol - engine doesn't rev smoothly and bogs
i went to test drive a 95 del sol yesterday and it ran fine when it was cold but as soonn as the car warmed up it started acting wierd. it wouldnt rev smooth at low rpms and when i would taike off in any gear it would havew just exhaust sound and the at about 3 thousand rpms it would start making this really wierd sound.when i would let off the gas it would stop. it also wasnt getting full power i hammered it one time to see what it had and it was pretty good, but the second time it boggede down slightly and didnt kick back in until up in the high rpms and then took off. does anyone know whats going on. i would really like to get this car.
could be anything and theres probably plenty more wrong with it that you dont know about and if the person selling dont care enough to fix it just means its been whooped and regular maintenance has probably not been done very often if at all
well its being sold by a guy that sells cars all the time. i went to test drive it last night and i meet him at a shop. he was having the door handles fixed and had new tires put on it. it rasn fine at first and then stared doing that when i was following him home to his house. and the srs light is on. this will be my first honda so im not sure what any of this means.

its real cheap he only want 1995 for it and he is gonna trade me for my truck im going to look at it again on saterday that way i can open the hood and try to diagnose the problem. this is what im in school for so i like a challenge.

The SRS light being on could indicate that the airbags don't work or that the car has been in an accident.
Does the CEL work or has it been disabled by a previous owner?
If you have a mechanic or mechanic friend, take them with you to inspect the car.

If it runs good until it warms up theres a reasonably good chance it's got a blown headgasket. Unless the body and interior were near mint I probably wouldn't touch it.
yea ive got all kinds of friends that work on cars that i can take with me and the check engine light wasnt on when i drove it just the srs. i dont really care if the airbags dont work. but i do car if its been in an accident.
it wasnt over heating or anything my friends told me it was burning oil but from what i hear thats about all hondas. and the car does have a really good body and a great interior. the trunk just needs resprayed black from clear coat coming off.
If the CEL works and no codes are thrown:
When you turn the key from off to ON(II), the CEL should turn on and then turn off after 2 seconds. If the CEL never turns on, it is disabled or the CEL bulb is blown (= warning sign).

Long story short, unless he's willing to offload it for $500 (and you're willing to possibly do a metric ***-load of work to it) just walk away. There are better options in that price range.
For any car that has weird problems like stupid engine noises yet the car DOES run - $700 should be the most you should pay. Unless we are talking a classic but a Del Sol isn't such.
He will probably say the engine was rebuilt recently or the problems are easy to fix.
First, you cannot know the history unless there is verifiable documentation.
Second - If a problem on a car is "easy to fix" then the seller would probably have fixed it. "Oh that is just a sensor" my ***.
Weird engine noises are not caused by sensors, they are caused by something damaged. Could be so simple as an idler pulley but could be something like engine bearings eating themselves alive.
DO NOT go paying two grand for something that will cause you endless grief.
Offer $700 instead and if he tells you where to go, keep looking. Is this something you found listed on craigslist? That site is BAD about having scammers.
"Burns oil but that is all hondas". I doubt that. I have had cars that were not 1/2 the car that a honda is and they didn't burn oil. Trust me, I have had some REAL junkers in my day

OP will end up buying the car anyways since it was the first del slow he found.
I bought a 98 EX with a Y8 from a guy that was making a funny noise. I determined it was coming from the alternator and talked him down $100 because of the possible alternator problem. Turned out it needed a $7 alternator mounting bolt (missing). Car runs great, quiet and smooth.
Buddy of mine bought a honda for $100 that wouldn't start. New starter later... great car.
Sometimes these minor problems can turn out to be great deals.
Take an experienced mechanic with you to diagnose the car, and make an intelligent decision regarding price negotiations or possible required repairs. Noises can be deceiving.

A throw out bearing will cause an engine to bog? The guy should have given you an estimate if he had it "looked at".
Is there some reason you're stuck on this particular car? Find another Del Sol. This one is screaming money pit.

The bearing itself is about $30, you have to pull the transmission to replace it. It wont cause the engine to bog, and beyond that they really don't fail very often, and almost never catastrophically. If it is in fact bad it will make noise when you begin to depress the clutch pedal. If it's completely flown apart the clutch wont release and you'll most likely have some loud noises coming from the transmission area.
