Default 1996 LS - ODB2 to ODB1

In preparation of future upgrades and such (and for experimentation and learning purposes), I'm looking to convert my 96 LS to ODB1.

Here's roughly what I was planning on doing:

1. Installing a

2. then a

3. and finally grabbing some tools from http://wikitest.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/.../SoftwareTools to do some tweaking from a laptop (I know, catastrophic failure is imminent, but I needs to get ready fer my turbo upgrade ).

I realize there are some nitty gritty details left out above, most of which are well documented, however I'm wondering if there are any major steps I'm missing, and if there is any more performance that can be squeezed out of a factory stock LS/B18b1 by tweaking some maps within the ECU ROM (maybe some pre-baked, quick tricks) ?

Thanks!

Sounds good!

However may I humbly suggest that you look into a Neptune RTP instead? Make sure you also have a wideband O2 sensor. A gauge is practically necessary as well, although it can be considered optional as long as some other steps are taken.

You're honestly not going to get much out of a B18B, particularly if it's got stock airflow. However it'll be necessary down the road if you're getting a turbo, and practice tuning on a safe N/A system will definitely help you street tune your turbo.

NepTune looks gangsta! Thanks for the heads up...

Yeah, I actually do plan on turboing, and wanted to do this as a preliminary step (and for learning purposes as well).

I just didn't want to go into the turbo stuff here, since there is a thread just for that (I'm sure you know), and so didn't want to cause a ruckus!

Thanks for the feedback, good infos!

I have not used Hondata but Neptune is awesome. The customer service is top notch. The anti-theft is nice, too, but the dealmaker is the direct serial logging. This lets you connect your wideband (Innovate brand, only) directly to your computer while logging. Neptune reads and plots the wideband signal off the wideband directly. This is very important because resistance in the signal wires to the ECU causes error in the voltage readings the ECU gets from the wideband. You can fix this easily enough by programming a "voltage offset" into Neptune. It's fine, except the voltage offset can change with load! Meaning that you might be reading AFR correctly while cruising, but you might be off by several tenths at WOT. By direct logging you avoid this problem altogether.

... yeah, I totally forgot to point that out too.

Seriously though, that's some hardcore knowledge and should come in handy.

I can't imagine the countless novice's that have gotten stuck on the voltage offset, I totally would've been irate.
