Default Need a manual tranny for D16y7

Hi there,

I have a 1999 Honda Civic LX Sedan with Manual transmission. Motor D16y7. My tranny is really starting to go down quick. Lots of screeching and rattling. Only need the car to run for another 6 months or up to a year so trying to find a used tranny to put in there. I don't know how to do it so will pay a friend of mine who is an excellent mechanic to do it.

What kind of transmission could I put in there? What models? Where could I find one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can try searching for a transmission in the marketplace, Craigslist and other various places such as junkyards.

Or just go to your local junk yard and get the transmission from any non-SI 92-00 Civic. They'll all bolt up. Just get whatever's cheapest.

you will want to get one from a sedan...

Hatches have a different final drive, 3.7 as opposed to your 4.058

If you get one from a Y8 equipped car, even better..

Final is 4.25

Thanks so much for the replies!

How about a 2000 EX (vtec) tranny? Would that make a difference or would that work?

Thats about the best choice you could make..

Short gear ratio, and a 4.25 final drive...

Boo ya..

^^

I wouldn't

The VX is an econo hatch... The ratios will not be the same as your sedans... And it will feel sluggish with the different ratios.

Do your best to find one from a "sedan" or one mated to a D16Y8 or D16Z6

Ok... again, thank you so much for all the advice! Trying to find something in the marketplace and it's messy! Ha ha. Not having much luck on craigslist either...

How about this one: SOHC NON VTEC D16Y7
WITH VSS
WILL FIT ANY D SERIES MOTOR
CAME OFF MY 2000 CIVIC DX
HAS AROUND 89,000 MILES
SHIFTED FINE NO GRINDING OR POP OUTS

It has 89,000 miles on it but seller wants $400 for it. Thoughts?

Ask the seller if the transmission is out of a "hatch" or "Coupe"

I'm not to familiar with state side trim levels..

Here is a transmission gear ratio chart... Use the table to find what suits you best...

Ok, I'll ask him. Transmission says E7F P4A on one side of it. On other side it says S40 2006683. Does that help?

The code E7F P4A is followed by more numbers..

Should look like this...

E7F-P4A-A000 or B000

A000 is from a D16Y7... But the Code still does not tell you which final drive the car has... Only knowing if it was out of a hatch or coupe can tell you.. Or you need to take it apart..

B000 is out of a D16Y8... It is better in more ways than just the final drive and short ratios... I believe the cases bearing are heavier...

Not saying you need the better trans... Just saying if you have an oppurtunity to get one, its worth the extra $50-$100 over the more generic ones..

Seems a bit steep, but it is low miles and exactly what you need...

I'd offer $250... Go from there..
