my friend has a 2001 honda civic 4 door. There's a gas smell coming from rear, and the engine check light is not on. Any have any idea why there's a gas smell coming from the rear or have a similar situation?

Also car chokes when it's revved near 3k RPMs
and the fumes are sometimes in the cabin

 

This sounds like an exhaust leak.

The 3k limit may be a sign of the car running in limp mode. Check and see if you get any codes.
