Default EX engine into Civic DX - What's needed for this swap?

so here is my question. my father has a 97 civic dx sohc well the engine is bad. he has an ex engine but that one has variable valve timing. can you run the engine in the dx without hooking up vvt. will it run right. im not interested in the tuning aspect just normal everyday driving. thanks
