Default Lack of power and mileage - Could it be from the vacuum line?

I have a new intake on my car, and there is no hose running to the vacuum line so it is just sucking in air from right where it is. I read it can cause you to lose power and mileage, but that's if it is a leak. I am getting 15 mpg and less in my 1995 honda accord. I will have no problem fixing the intake up with a vacuum line if that is the case. How important is it to have a hose running from the intake to the vacuum line? I am still a novice, so any feedback good or bad is appreciated (even if you are telling me how dumb I am).

Also my car seems like it is lacking power, as well as mileage.

I would just get a vacuum line and put it on, see if it makes a difference. They're really cheap at Autozone, so it wouldn't hurt to try. Also, did you check for leaks?

I have absolutely no lines running off of the intake. I just bought the hose and am going to put in on later today. I have a breather on the crank case, do you think that is just as good for the pcv valve? The vacuum line is just sucking in air where its at, there aren't any hoses or anything connected to it

Are you referring to the vacuum line that comes off of the top of the valve cover?

I'm not sure if it is called a vacuum line. The pcv on the valve cover, I put a breather filter on it. The part where I don't have a hose going to is behind the valve cover, closer to the fire wall. It is a pipe that curves up. It has a very small diameter and the stock intake had a hose running to it.

you need the PCV valve hooked up and connceted to where it is supposed to go on the intake manifold. The PCV valve is located in the middle of the valve cover and has a vacuum line that goes straight to the upper intake manifold. that needs to be hooked up. PCV stands for Positive Crank Ventilation. Hook it back up. There is another vacuum line located on the left side of the valve cover. That one you can put a breather filter on, just make sure that the hole on the intake is plugged.

When you state 'intake' do you mean the aluminum intake manifold, or the air flow tube attached between the filter and manifold?

I think that answers your question of how bad it is to not have that line attached.

The PCV valve cannot be replaced with a simple breather tube. It does two functions, one is to remove hydrocarbons while circulating fresh air into the crankcase. The other is to aid in piston ring sealing.

There is an inlet and outlet to the PCV system, vacuum created at the intake manifold plenum will create flow from the valve/cam cover where the metering valve(PCV valve) is. And a breather tube is needed to pull in fresh air to the crankcase, this is often a tube between the non metered side of the cam cover to the air filter box or flow tube, usually a spot before the throttle body.
