Default Want more pep in my 98 Civic EX coupe

Picked up a 98 ex coupe for 1400 $ with 166k from a good friend. Runs really good and vtec kicks in like a charm. Gonna get the valve cover gasket replaced this weekend but other then that its in really good shape.

All im wanting is a little more pep in my daily driver. Dont wanna race it or anything but id like to get pushed in my seat driving around denver/boulder. Ive beard about a final drive upgrade since its only a sohc. Im pretty much gonna replace all the internals but not boost it. Not wanting to deal with the up keep of a turbo.

Couple questions, do any parts from over d series motors fit the d16y8 and will any other parts from other civics fit? Is it worth the weight saved to pull the ac and power steering? I drove a 88 cougar with the 5.0 withno ps for over a year so ithink a civic withnone would be fine.

Anybody know any good shops in the denver metro area?

I dont have a set budget but can put about 600 $ a month in with ease.

Note: I ask about other civic parts fitting the d series because it seems that b series parts are easier to find and a little cheaper.

Thanks

If you drive the car everyday, I would leave the A/C. Power steering is up to you but, I wouldn't remove it either.

Noted.

Also..im also getting a 90 something hatch for 300 $ in feburary. Might turn it into a racer. Its so cheap because it needs a tie rod and the guy is moving.

Building an all-motor D-series is just another way to go broke and go slow while doing it.

if you want it to be a daily driver, definitely keep the ac and ps. remove those on a project car you want to build, and keep your daily nice and comfortable. You'll be glad you did when summer gets here.

I think that's what I said. If that's what you heard you should take heed.

If you're going to have two cars, I would keep one of those cars stock and comfortable for daily driving duties.

To be honest, I probably will keep the ex fairly stock. Just would like a little more pep for getting around town and more quick speed for passing on the highway.

My brother is in okc and has a few wrecked hondas, mainly side swipes and tbones, that he said I can have as long as I come get them. Lol gotta call him and see what hes got exactly.

Of course it's what I said. Build a D-series/SOHC and you'll go broke trying to get it to go fast. It's designed to be an economy engine from the factory. Swap, boost or leave it stock. I don't think you have a clear idea of what you mean by "pep" in terms of horsepower and how exactly you're gonna get it.

there is no point in building the internals and not boosting it

Unless you plan on using OEM parts.

the d16 is weak sauce and so is a b16 because they have no TQ. the b16 has alil more potential then the D series all motor. a d16 boosted on a stock block will net better numbers then any b16-b18 n/a build of the same cost as it would cost to boost the D. 2500-3000 for a nice set-up; no ebay chineese turbo kit BS... A smaller turbo will give u great TQ and stock block is good for 200hp. so save up my friend....

I think you need to learn to drive it better.
When you think you are under horse powered and want more power... it screams to me you havent learned to maximize your driving potential first.

Throw some rods and vitara pistons in, you'll be good for 300+whp. Otherwise just leave it stock

Yea there's really no point in building up your motor to do the same thing it's doing now. Boost it. Even at 8 it will be fun.

Stock block good for only 200hp how do you figure? I bought my Del Slo with a y8 boosted to 240hp and it ran like this for 40k miles without a hitch. Just brush up tunes once the air to fuel started dipping low. I no longer have the papers on it as I sent them with the Motor once I pulled it and started building my B16.

But like everyone else said. You could put a stock b16 or b18 whatever in it for cheaper than rebuilding that motor and get more "pep" out of it. You will want a/c and p/s unless summers are not hot and humid there...
