Default 1998 Accord, Replaced Axles and MTF..now car doesnt move! please help.

Guys, I am stumped. I have done axles many times and never have had this happen. The car isa 1998 4cyl manual trans accord with 220k miles. It ran PERFECTLY before I started this job aside from the axles being worn out. All I did was remove both sides of axles, drain the MTF fluid and then fill it back up with GM syncromesh fluid. The car started a little rough but it was -2 degrees so that shouldnt be anything to worry about. But I put the clutch in, shifted to gear, and then let the clutch out and NOTHING happen. No grind, no movement, no stall. The is a wine from the transmission like it was in reverse, and I did have it in reverse, but nothing else happen even with the clutch all the way out and the stick in gear.

Please tell me that someone knows why this could happen!

It is possible that you didn't properly secure the half shafts in place. Did you double check to make sure they are secure and properly "clicked" into place?

The only thing I have read is that the axles may not be in all the way. I am hoping that this is the case but I am pretty sure I heard and felt them both click in. Also, I was questioning autozone because they said that the passenger side axles are the same for Automatic and Manual transmissions. IS this true? If not, they sold me an axle that is too short for my car. The one did seem too short but I assumed that it was because the old one was strecthed out. Is that possible?

as far as i know the passenger side axle has always been the same for F series accords, automatic or manual. i agree with the rest that you did not get the axle in.

One axle is not seated right... also did you change your axle seals since you where in there?

If one isn't seated all the way in your car won't move. Also if your questioning weather or not the part was correct, i always compare before installing. The half shafts don't "stretch". The boots stiffen and may hold the cups out farther.

I compared and they were very close but seemed different. I went back to autozone and exchanged the axle and the salesman assured me that the passenger side axles were both the same for manual and auto.

I am hoping that all I need to do tomorrow is click in the passenger side axle but I 100% remember clipping in the driver side. I will also try spinning the wheels when the are off the ground to see if there is a connection between them.

Is it possible that I put the driver side axle in the passenger side and vice versa? They were very similar but I can't imagine I would make that mistake. And even if I did, wouldn't one of them obviously not fit?

And yes, I replaced the seals while doing this and seated them properly.

You would notice a HUGE difference if you had them on the wrong sides. You shouldn't be able to fit your pinky finger between the cup and Trans. If you can reach up with any of your fingers and touch the input shaft on the half shaft, it's not in far enough.

thanks guys, it was the axle. it was out about 2 inches. some of the MTF sprayed out of the transmission since i ran the car without the axles seated. should this be an immediate concern or can i drive it a bit before jacking it back up and adding more fluid? i filled it through the axle hole but i think i will try the fill plug this time.

I would refill the fluid immediately. I know what it's like to have a transmission stop working due to lack of fluid, it's not fun.

I have this funnel (not my pic):

The black tip on the end fits over the transmission breather tube tightly enough that it won't leak. Easy peasy.

The fill hole has to be open to let the air out... just watch for dripping out the fill, then you're done!

lack of fluid is how much? i cant imagine more than 1/8 of a quart came out, plus i overfilled it in the first place.
