Default Advice on rebuilding a B or D series for daily abuse?

My d16 now has 220000 miles and its time to start thinking about what engine is next. The D has been amazingly reliable. ive put over 60,000 stop and go miles and almost always keep my foot in the floor, I shift around 4-5000 rpm all the time. (I deliver newspapers on the sides of a very busy highway and in the mountains...)

Im now contemplating rebuilding a d or a b in my basement. As you can imagine cost is a factor. I'd want to keep my budget around ~1500~ dollars.

Ive only called one salvage yard so far and they qouted me 750 for a b20 without transmission, 110000 miles. I have no idea what is considered a good price for these engines. My main worries are how much am I going to end up spending on a complete rebuild.

I want a solid engine that is going to take 200k of pure abuse like this D has.

What are the chances im going to need to rebore the cylinder walls? cost?

This means new pistons.. cost?

haynes manual scares me when it says oil gallery plugs may have to be drilled out and then retapped... cost?

What is definitivley going to need replaced and what is going to be in good
condition?

basically what am I going to pay to build a solid engine not including exhaust, header, starter, etc. It wont ever be boosted but it will have a header, exhuast, cams and be driven HARD.

Is b20 the engine to look towards or will it be much cheaper to get a hold of a b18 with trans. should I call salvage yards or look for a $800 craigslist integra/crv?

Thank you to anyone with real answers.. I know for the cost I could buy another shitty civic, but a fresh engine is what im after.

If a fresh engine is what your after then IDK why your looking to a Bswap. The B20 will take a trans, axles, clutch, fly, and youll burn up your budget with a quickness.

Why not rebuild your D with new bearings, rings, gaskets, etc?

You could also buy a fresh D for your budget. You can keep the chassis rolling forever if you do the bushings yourself.

Rebuild ur d series. If u do b series swap u will have to buy a engine and trans and do a lot more work , axles swap, ecu, mayb some engine harness cut and wiring, new rings bearings honing etc etc etc

I hope so, I often question how long this shell will last... I drive up wierd embankments and **** all the time. I am on 2 or 3 wheels way too often.. When I got the car it never made creaking noises but now it sounds like its stretching apart and makes popping noises when im only on 3 wheels

Drive the D till it blows. Then upgrade whatever breaks. They really are remarkable little motors.

I also vote to rebuild and upgrade the D.. with your budget the dollars would go alot farther on the D then having to swap a B in there. as someone mentioned above just getting all the parts necessary to make the swap work would eat your budget up... There was another thread on here recently where the D was making like 220 hp on dyno.. so they can get up there..

I'm sure it'll cost more than $1,500 to make a D-series put out 220whp. If I'm wrong please show me because everyone would be doing it. Including me..

Ive been spending way to much time on dseries.orgggg and its looking like even 150 is high for an n/a. Thats fine by me though! Ive got my ek way under 2000 pounds and it already pulls harrrd for what it is. Its so hard convincing myself not to go B series becuase of all the D haters on this website! Im going to start a high compression build with some better gearing eventually. 1st to 2nd are way to far apart, im going like 4 miles per hour at 6000 rpm in first gear...

y8 head with 3 way port and polish
77mm p29 pistons??
shot peened rods
new bearings and gaskets
balanced crankshaft
edlebrock intake or something like that
b series tb
tune

Im very newbish and the info on these D builds is scattered all over the place, some people talk **** about p29 pistons, some people love them. I should save this for another post though...
