Default Civic 2003 door keys

I just shelled out $222 to have the side door locks replaced. This is the FOURTH set of locks in the car's 9 years of life. Is this a common problem? It seems to be related to the anti-theft key system -- old-fashioned keys/locks didn't have to be replaced every 2 years.

Since we intend to keep this car a lot longer, is there an "outside" solution, not involving the dealership? I'd be happy to get along without the fancy key!

local locksmiths can recode key cylinders, (you may have to remove it and bring it to them)

also proper lubrication of the door lock assembly will help prolong life
