HOW CAN I INCREASE MY MPG on a '91 civic si hatchback...???

hello new to this site and hope this is posted as a tech question... mahalo

i live in hawaii and have a '91 civic si hatchback manual transmission..

the odometer reads some 428,000 miles... yep and i average about 34 mpg...?
(not sure if the miles are accurate meaning: if it's calibrated correctlly)
i'm sure it's a rebuilt engine.. bought the car 2 summers ago..
MY QUESTION IS:
in what simple ways can i increase my mileage?
in hawaii there is no smog check... so was wondering if taking off the catalytic convertor or modifying the exhaust might help...?
mahalo!!!
(thank you!!!)

Yup, this is how I averaged 44 mpg's out of my EG hatch. I drove 1st, 3rd, 5th all the time, getting to 5th as quickly and often as I could. Makes a big difference between fill ups.

I also removed the back seats and associated trim. Not much of a weight reduction, but every bit counts I suppose.

I'll toss some ideas your way to ponder.

Pulstar Spark Plugs

If that isn't good enough, Aqua Pulser Ignition

If you wanna get creative, look into the Gadgetman Groove

Some places you can check out to learn more about out-of-the-box ways to improve fuel economy:

This should get you started.
