Default k20 camshaft upgrade

Hi, so my buddy wants to gain some more power from his 06 rsx type s (k20z2).
Too bad he isn't so great with a wrench and wanted me to help him. My only problem is i have never messed with a k series. If this was a b series i wouldn't be here lol.
My goal is at least a 20hp gain.
My question is how much different is the k series?
Will i be able to run the cams without any ecu management (ca Smog issues)? Thanks for any input

Thanks for the reply. Could you explain a little more please. What would be a realistic gain from upgraded cams? He wants to do his timing chain so where already there. However its not my car so breaking the car isn't an option for me lol.

why replace the chain? the tensioner is the bigger issue that needs replacing most of the time.

what other mods does he have? start with bolt on's first. and if he wants to stay CA smog legal he might as well stop now.

there is absolutely no reason to change a chain or tensioner unless you find an issue with slack there. As for the camshaft concern, the motions in which you work things is ECU first before everything else, you'd be surprised how far you can get with just bolt ons and Kpro. Personally i would not cam a 2 liter unless i am doing a turbo setup for high HP, with that being said, cam's would not be the direction in which you guys should be, i would focus on the basics, Cold air intake, 3" exhaust, Race header, Kpro

the tensioner is a wear item and always a good idea to replace when upgrading cams

Thanks for all the replies. The car only has 78k so I we will hold off doing the chain and tensioner. As for the bolt ons and k pro I will defiantly look into that. If anyone could point me in a direction that would be great. Thanks again.

Start with the basic three: Intake, Header, Exhaust.

I did a CAI, Header, Exhaust and tune with Kpro and went from 193whp to 227whp.

That was on an 05 RSX with the K20Z1...But trust me just doing a CAI, a RH and Exhaust even without the tune REALLY opens up the K20 engines

**also your buddies engine is a K20Z1 not a K20Z2**

Agree before doing cams, the basics need to be covered! Someone who knows bseries should know the basics apply to all engines making them breath properly is the first course of action!!!

Kpro comes with basemaps you can run until you have it tuned
