Hey all,

I just picked up a 99 civic DX Hatchback and need to do a few upgrades. A lot of the interior was painted orange, and I'm going to re-paint it all black. I spent the day gutting all the plastic pieces from the interior, all the plastics are cleaned and ready to be painted. While the interior is removed, I'm also going to install a car alarm. Here are the results of day 1:

 

That poor interior. Thank God they didn't paint the face of that SI cluster too.

 

only thing that looks hard to paint would be the vents..hurry up and paint over that awful orange!

Why don't you just go to the junkyards and buy all new pieces instead of taking all that time and painting them? That is what I always do. Between the junkyards and craigslist you'll replace everything for not that much more than you spent on paint and materials. Plus you could re-sell the old stuff to some ricer for cheap and probably break even with a lot less work involved.

 

^ This. It will never look right again after it's painted. All those pieces can be found in a hatch or coupe if dark grey or hatch, coupe or sedan if light grey. Interior pieces are CHEAP to buy.

Glad everyone feels the same way I do about orange interiors.

Anyways, here's some updates:

All the plastic pieces have been painted, pics coming soon. I'm also installing a car alarm, its a 2 way with remote start. I have added door lock actuators to both the doors and plan on putting the one that I removed from the driver door in the hatch so I can lock/unlock the hatch from the remote.

werd.. theres 9 civic partouts in the classifieds.

 

I will probably end up getting all new plastics eventually, but I got it painted for free, as a favor, so at the moment, thats cheaper than what I'm going to find in the classifieds. I'm not looking to keep a bunch of repainted plastics in the car for the long term, just for a little bit while I plan out what I'm going to do to the car.

I would rather take some time and plan out what I want to do to it before I start spending money left and right on it. The only thing I've spent money on so far was the alarm, and that's to protect the initial investment, so I don't mind spending money on it at all.

Not only did I read that thread, I had planned on doing exactly that from the beginning. I've had quite a few different cars, and no matter what, step 1 is always 2-way car alarm. In my opinion, its something that should absolutely be done every time.

That being said, to the guys questioning painting my interior, phase 1 of my buildout is install an alarm. The two additional things I was trying to accomplish during this phase were 1) not having to stare at an orange interior, and 2) get something running for music. Both of those will be redone in the future, right now my priority is an alarm.

 

I saw the thread title, and as soon as the pictures loaded I was like "oh dear god what has this man done". I was greatly reassured that you were painting OVER the orange, lol.

 

Lmfao i know right!, before i updated my drivers and programs i had 185-190 edits on my dream car build lol i love that thread, i already had an idea but some of the stuff like 3-ring binder idea and stuff is good to do. My god like 2-3 years ago when i knew a good amount about working on cars but not what parts to buy my list was LITERALLY like 65k without any rebuilds or services lmfaoooo my god i was dumb lol

 

UPDATE:

Here is the painted interior, gloss black was not my first choice, but its better than the orange. I will end up replacing all the plastics later, but for free, this is a good temporary solution

Alright, phase 1 of my car build out is complete, installed a car alarm, the repainted interior and a stereo. The car hasnt been cleaned yet, so the interior in the after pic is dirty.

Wow, that was an eyesore before. I don't know how the PO didn't get a headache from just sitting in there.

I do see a few nice pieces on that car: folding mirrors, leather steering wheel, Si cluster, rear OEM(?) lip with mudflaps that fit. Any idea if the mirrors are LHD? (You can tell if you have trouble seeing out of them due to bad viewing angle.)

 

I do have a little trouble seeing out of the angle that they are at.

I was actually going to do another post to ask what I would need to hook them up. I have the power mirror controller on the drivers kick panel, and both of the mirrors have the plugs for power, is it just some wires with a plug to hook them up, or do they need some kind of circuitry inbetween the mirror and the controller?

 

^ Depends if they are just power mirrors or whether they are power folding. How many wires are at the connector? Don't just go by the number of wires sticking out ... unplug and count the male pins.

Another question: Are both mirrors convex and/or flat? Or are they normal: Flat on driver's side, convex on passenger.

 

The black makes it look a whole lot cleaner!
