need advice on a mini me
i bought a 99 civic ex and shortly after purchasing the motor blew, i bought a motor off of ebay and it turned out to be a mini me with a jdm d15b block and i am trying to figure out what head it is. i know it is a 1.6l sohc vtec but not sure which one. also trying to figure out what pistons i need to use because the new ones i bought come up to high and hit the head when i turn the crank. i am new to honda motors and i am trying to learn more about the motor i am trying to build.
Thanks,
Will

Stop buying parts and read first. There are markings stamped on the head that identify it. Look for those.

thanks for the link. i found out it is a d16y8 head from a 00 civic ex, is this a good match for the d15b? do i used the vx timing belt with this set-up? and does anyone know the part number for the pistons that fit the jdm d15b?

it will work but you will need the bolt where the vtec solenoid sits so the head mounts on properly and you will need to have someone wire the vtec solenoid to the ecu if you dont know how to do it otherwise its a waste of time. but with that out of the way it will bolt up nicely. and you will have a vtec engine. if you can find the d15z6 head then that would be a better match for your block but any d series is interchangeable with d series, same as b series with b series and k series with k series h with h and so on.
My personal opinion and I have owned and modded 6 of my 7 civics. Dont waste money on building/modifying a SOHC engine, N/A- heres why. you will dump a ton of money into it, want more, be dissapointed, see your friends who swapped motors kill your car on the street, etc. After its all said and done, a naturally aspirated sohc d series wont make more than 150 hp, unless you spend crazy bucks, which isnt worth it. Build and turbo your d series or get a B series swap now before its too late and feel that sinking sensation that $2000 you can even break 150hp. Anyway, go B if its your first swap, lots of parts out there and cheaper than K. If you have fat pockets go all motor K and enjoy, otherwise. Before you spend $1 on parts start researching, its the cheapest way to see what others have done for how much with what result. Trust me I was a e D series glutton for punishment, if your not going turbo and even then, a mild street d series turbo is only fun for a while, i.e. 180-200hp d series. do your homework and spend and 20 hrs research before you decide
