Don't think it's the switch.
We've fixed that before.
Took the switch out and lights are still on.
Please help

The brake lights turn off when the button on the brake light switch is pressed in. When the pedal is in the up position, does your brake switch button press against the rubber stopper. If not, that's why the brake lights stay on.

The lights stay on when we push the switch in.
We have completely removed the switch and the lights stay on.
We have tested the switch on a meter and it tests good.
I read the other posts about it being the switch and the "blue crayon" thing.
thanks

The brake lights get voltage through the switch, so the question is where are your brake lights getting voltage?

Do your brake lights turn off if you remove the hood fuse for the horn and brakes?

Do the brake lights only turn on when the parking lights are on?

Lights go off when we remove the fuse.
Lights are on all the time regardless of headlights being on.
Couldn't get them to go off except by removing fuse or unhooking battery.

In the unplugged 2P brake switch connector with the brake fuse installed and the battery connected, do both terminals in the connector read battery voltage to body ground?

I will have to check tomorrow.
Is there anything else to check when I'm at the car?

If you get voltage on both terminals, then look for a short between the two terminals in the connector.

Ok
This is going to sound crazy but neither terminal in the brake light switch connector have voltage.
No current with the fuse in or out.
But when i pull the fuse the brake lights go out.
I had a mechanic friend come and verify that I was testing the switch connector properly.

Just to be sure this is a standard shift with cruise control.
Is there more than one switch on the brake pedal?

Another interesting fact
The switch that we removed is backwards from what the schematic says it should be.
If not pressed , the connection is broken.
When we press the switch the connection is made.
We are are dumbfounded.

Thanks

Is the switch located at the top of the brake pedal, as shown in the diagram I posted? The brake light switch also serves as the cruise control switch. It has a 4P connector.

Can you post a picture of the switch connector? How many wires and what wire colors in the switch connector?

Is the switch you are dealing with on the clutch pedal rather than the brake pedal? The clutch pedal has a lower cruise control switch (2P connector) and a higher safety starter switch (2P connector).

Ok
Just for the record it's been my son who has crawling up there and looking at the wrong switch.
You are completely right! We have been testing the wrong switch.
We adjusted the brake switch mechanism and now everything is working right.
Thank you for taking the time to walk us through this.
I'd buy you a beer if I could.
