Default 98 Accord Solenoid leak

My mechanic told me that my solenoid was leaking oil pretty bad. It will be 500 to replace it. He said it was not the Oring as earlier suspected, but was in fact the solenoid. he also said it was a common problem on these Accords.

I own a 98 Accord EX 4 door with 164K and I really dont want to spend 500 on this. Can I fix the leak myself? I am pretty handy and replaced the AC fan on my own.

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?

Thanks.

What solenoid is leaking? $500 sounds outrageous. You should be able to replace it depending upon what it is.

I have a 94 Honda accord that had a leak from the v-tech solenoid( if that's what ur talking about) we were loosing a couple quarts every couple of days.also the ck engine light would come on around 4000rpms.it was obvious the leak was coming from the solenoid or the valve it connects to directly below. We priced a new one $400 used ones were about $50 to $100
so we ck on the oring/gaskets for both the solenoid and the valve $22.50 for both so we went with that at that price y not. When we took off the solenoid someone had use gasket sealant to try to fix the prob it interfered with the oil flow hence the ck engine light. We fixed that and put the gaskets in no more oil leak and the ck engine light stopped coming on cheap and easy fix.might be worth a try

The leak is coming from the vtech solenoid. When the car is running, oil drips out from the connection between the solenoid and the engine. Can I just order a used or new vtech solenoid and switch it out? Is it that straight forward? I want to make sure I dont seriously screw up my engine by attempting this. I noticed the vtech solenoid is super easy to access it in the 98 model.

Should be a simple remove and replace. Get the gasket, also.
