what are gates in a manual transmission?

when reading about manuals i always see how many gears they have and how many gates.

what are the gates and what do they do.

This isn't relavent to stock Hondas. For setups using the stock style transmission there is only one shifter I know of people using that has a gate to lock it out of 1st.
