All motor non-vtec setup, need info!
Hey everybody, I'm fairly new to this board...
My name is Ryan and I have a 95 B18B1 swap in my 94 CX hatch.
Right now I have basic boltons, with the addition of an S-AFC. I want a big power adder without forced induction. I am truly considering the Crower 404's along with the spring/retainer kit and a GSR tranny to increase my power. Should I see a substantial amount of power gained?
If I just added the 404's, spring/retainer kit, mod ECU to redline @ 7700, and added a GSR tranny, how safe would this be? Could I drive with these mods daily and it be safe? Would I need to upgrade any other internals? I respect my car and baby it, I never push redline unless I'm at the track.
I understand higher compression and port/polish job will help considerably but I don't know how to go about it safely.
Any help all you N/A non-vtec guru's can supply will be beneficial.

I built an all motor ls for a guy a while back. We used civic type R pistons, a jg head, type R manifold (modified to fit), crower 405's (i think that's the number, the biggest ones), jdm type R header, type R tranny, apex afc and itc. And all the little bolt ons associated. Let's just say I wouldn't use those pistons in a street car again. The compression was super high and we had to use the apex itc (timing controller) to take a lot of timing out up top. It ended up makeing 178whp on pump gas. I would really recommend a turbo if you want alot of power. Even with all this done it won't compare to a turbo. You're call though....
I think this would be a relatively safe set-up. 'jinxproof' had an all-motor B20Z setup and with all bolt-ons, 404s + springs/retainers, and B16 tranny w/ LSD his hatch went 13.3 on slicks. This was tuned however...
I'll be doing a setup similar to that only I'm going to be using a '98 JDM Type R tranny (4.785 fd), Z10 block girdle, crower 404s with springs/retainers, shot-peened rods (for now) with ARP bolts. Also ITR AEM CAI, JDM DC 4-1, 2.5" in/out cat, 2.5" exhaust.
..all this when I get the money of course...
I don't think a 7700 RPM redline would hurt the LS too much...
But it's always better to be safe than sorry..

Thanks for the informative replies...
Turbo would be great, but I'll be unable to afford that due to school. So, I'll hafta live with a nice little N/A setup for now. It seems the cams/tranny combo is the best bet for now.
N20 is also an option but it's just not the same, ya know? Knowing power is constantly available at the throttle is a lot more comforting than flipping a switch all the time.

Look my sig, i'm not all the time on the switch
good luck w/ ur non vtec set up man. i am also working on my non-vtec engine as well. i'm doing basic bolt ons though..cause this is my daily ride. my plans are simple, skunk 2 manifold, bigger TB(not sure which size is best yet), headers, and lightened fly wheel. i hope i can see bigger improvements with those done.
to ur project.

well..my gsr tranny was always on my LS motor, i bought it that way (its a long story) so i can;t really tell u i felt a difference between the two trannys. sorry bro. do u plan on getting a gsr tranny?
krazn:
Yeah, I definitely planned on the GSR tranny. I am just trying to get input from people who have this combo (LS motor/GSR tranny). I've heard it makes a major difference N/A, but have never heard first hand from someone else.
I am going to call Osaka tomorrow to get a quote on a GSR tranny.

If you keep an eye out on the classifieds here, you can probably find a used GSR tranny for around $800...probably cheaper than buying it at a business.
Let us know how everything turns out...

i agree w/ devin. last time i checked the classified, someone was selling a gsr tranny for 500 pick up. 600 shipped. i was gonna get it for a spare, but i had no money at the time.
WOW, wanna be shocked?
Osaka quoted my GSR tranny for $560! Shipping will probably be another $150 but that's still a bargain no matter how you look at it.
If you have never heard of Osaka check them out @ http://www.osakajdmmotors.com. They have the best prices you will find on swaps/longblocks. The only downside is that axles are extra.
Anyways, now what to do! Buy a GSR tranny? Buy N20? Buy Crower 404's?

ive read alot on g2ic with guys running 404's i/h/e and some tuning dipping into the low 15s. up the compression and more tuning your looking at 14s all day. and thats in a 2nd gen integra body. but be careful i heard you shouldnt rev a LS more than 7500 stock. good luck on your all motor nonVTEC

I have a friend with a newer LS integra who ran 15.3 with I/H/E and pullies (His first time to a drag track). In a 94 hatch with I/H/E and crower 404s and a GSR tranny you should be in the low 14s for sure...probably 13s on slicks!
Hmmm, I'm really considering doing the camshafts. I hope I will be able to see some pretty big results in the 404's. $600 is a lot of money and I hope I'll be spending it wisely.
Sidenote:
I bought some new tires for the ole steelies... 215/50/13. They are absolutely wide as ****. Since they were just a mere $40 a piece I thought I'd run a little experiment and compare them to the 195/60/13's that are on there now. Both tires are Sumitomo's.
The 195's gripped hard and I'm hoping these will also, if not better.

215-50-13!? You'll have a nice grip with those!
And for the 404's, i've had them for about two weeks now in my b20z and love them. I still have the stock ECU so i have to shift a 7200rpm but i can feel there's still power past 7k. Can't wait to get it chipped. I still need some parts for my puzzle like a test pipe and header for better flow.
Future plan: built bottom end and a port&polish head.

Your last comment about how much you liked your 404's convinced me into getting them. B20Z and the B18B are very similar so I will expect the results you saw..
.
BTW - do you have an aftermarket throttle body/intake manifold? From what I hear, substantial power can be gained from the 404's by opening the airways with the TB/intake manifold/port&polish.

nice to hear these n/a non vtec cars representing. i'm too afraid to play w/ my internals. A. i'm not that great w/ cars yet, so if something goes wrong...i wouldn't know what the hell to do. B. i just dont have the money for it.
good luck to all u guys though!

SpoonfedEG: Glad i convinced you! In my book, non-vtec owners should atleast get the 404's for nice results.
I'm using for now the stock b18a intake manifold from my 1992 RS. It fits perfectly but obviously there's place for improvement with a skunk2 intake manifold and a port and polish head, i'm on a budget so couldn't afford everything at the same time. The drag season is over up here in Montreal so for next season (May 2003), i'll start with what i have and see what i'll do....i was already doing 15.4 n/a with the stock b18a with just a cold air intake, i'm sure i'll get some nice numbers n/a with the new setup on slicks. Also running nitrous but i need to get a new fuel pump and MSD before i spray again...especially on the new motor.
It's a long term project, i'm not planning on getting rid of the car yet so i'm taking my time but damn i wish i had the money right now for a nice set of pistons and rods
Good luck on your project too

if you run a 15.9 or so at the track with a ls tranny, you will run high 14's low 15's with a b16a tranny, I have a completely stock ls in my sol,b16a tranny, act clutch(extreme plate and 6 puck disc) chipped ecu, ihe. and I run 14.7 with a stock crx exauast(really restrictive) and 14.2 with open header..... B16a rocks for na motors!
