My girlfriends car just won't start it's weird her dad bought her this car 4 years ago, it's never been tuned up so I figured maybe it needed one.

Basically here's what it was doing when she would slow down it would shake and just shut off. Then there would be times where it would be fine wed stop for gas and it wouldn't turn off. So I took it to my mechanic he said it needed a tune up and the Distributor was blown bad. So we paid him to do the tune up.

New spark plugs, wires , cap, rotor and even got the new distributor.

Car was fine for two days seemed not to turn off no shaking then yesterday it wouldn't start. Eventually it did but it's like frustrating we paid all that and still doing the same thing.

The battery is about a year old. The alternator is new too. When her car won't start it doesn't click it so I assume it isn't the starter.

It's almost like it wants to start but won't like it ran outta gas or something, I initially thought it was the fuel pump cause I have smelled gas. But I don't know anything. Lol

 

Ignition switch is failing

 

Would that cause the car to turn off while driving?

 

That is a possibility. Another is main relay but that brings about a host of other failures.

 

Would a failing ignition switch cause all the dash board lights to randomly flicker as we drive?
