99 Accord 140k: Tranny rebuilt, wait for it to die or buy a new car?
For a decent period of time my car has been jerking when it changes gears. I don't know how long exactly. But maybe for a year. Other than that it drives fine and I keep up with regular maintenance.
A couple of weeks ago the gears slipped TERRIBLY and I had to get the RPMs up to 5,000 to get the car to move an inch. It has since stopped that specific issue but the car still jerks when it changes into 2nd and 3rd gear.
Aamco quoted me $540 to dissect the transmission and find out exactly what's wrong with it. And another $1970 to rebuild it. Also, possibly another $380 to replace the torque converter if it needs it. And all these numbers could get higher if they need to do more work which they won't know until they pull the transmission out. That's approx $2400 and could go as high as $3,000 or even higher.
I'm no expert in this field and would like some opinions. Can I do better? Is it worth it? 20k more miles I need to get the belts done again. I put about 10,000 miles on it per year. The car runs well in my opinion but it's not in perfect condition. The sun is killing the paint job, the body has many minor dents on it and the interior leather isn't ripped or anything, but there are a couple of ink stains in some places. I'm not thinking I'd get much from a trade in.
And like I said, I'm not sure exactly how long the car has had this issue, but is there any way to determine if I can keep driving with it? Am I damaging the car by driving it around like this??
your thoughts?

If it's a V6 and you want to keep it plan on getting a rebuilt transmission and remaned torque converter, those things were complete junk. If it's a 4 cyl I'd probably roll the dice on a good used/junkyard transmission and torque converter.
well my only question is how much longer can i drive around like this?
forever as long as i don't bring the RPMs up to 3,000?
or should i take it in asap to avoid getting stuck somewhere or damaging it further??

How long it will last is anyone's guess, but generally speaking not long. If it was me I'd do something with it before it left me stranded.
The Aamco qoute is fair. Plan on it needing a torque converter regardless. If its a 4cyl model plan on spending ~$2100, If its a six cylinder plan on around ~$2600. Do not buy a used transmission if you're keeping the car for more than three months. Aamco offers a lifetime warranty for a little more money as well.
