Default help please!

Good afternoon everyone, i just signed up on here to try and get some assistance with my car. I have a 94 integra. On Friday night I was driving home from work and the rpms/needle was being erratic and bouncing up and down and then the car would die. It would start again and then immediately die or stay started until I try to drive again and the same thing would happen again.

I have begged everyone I know who works on cars and knows about cars to help me and I can't get anyone to help out. I have heard the IACV may need to be cleaned but then I heard a bunch of different things. I am a single mom, so driving this car while it's doing this is extremely dangerous, but I have no choice but to keep pushing it so I can get to work. I just need someone to please help me figure out what this is and how to fix it.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and hopefully I can get some leads in the right direction.

sounds like the iacv. could also be a vacuum leak aswell.

Have you checked your grounds by t-stat? Had exact same problems and ground was loose

You most likely have a bad ICM(ignition control module) in your distributor.it sends the tach signal, and is infamous for causing your symptoms..There is also a slight possibility that it could be the coil.

if these were bad,it might cause the car to die out..but this has nothing to do with her problem.it would not effect the tach in any way.

not to be ignorant but having a vacuum or a bad iacv would cause "roaming revs" amoung the tach would it not?

ive had vacuume leaks that would cause the rps to shoot up. drop. shoot up, drop etc etc..and then the car would die.

It's either a bad ignition coil or a loose ground at the thermostat housing. Had this issue before and it was a loose ground that thermostat housing. Check that before buying an ignition coil for $50 at your local auto parts store.

The idle is surging when it has a bad iacv or vacuum leak. It does not make the rpm needle go crazy like the OP described

Sorry, you are correct, the tach would roam, but it wouldnt bounce irradically.I agree that it could be a bad ground at the t stat housing as well, but like I said, the ICM and coil are infamous for this.I would at least have your distributor tested.

just saying. could be alot of things. ive had it happen to me with bad plug wires, bad coil pack (distibuter), the ecu could be on its way out. bad ground. spark plug wires touching causing a misfire. but this is just what has happend to me and what i could say it is with the info you gave out. then again. im new to the honda world. im used to a v8. but an engine is an engine

never the less it sounds like a igniction issue.
just my input.

I agree it is either the Tstat. grounds, or more then likely the ICM, forts ting you will notice when the ICM is on it's way out, is the tach becomes, "erratic and bouncing up and down"

As mentioned, redo, [disconnec, clean and reconnect] the termostat grounds, if problem persists, replace the ICM, or at least test or have it tested. 94
