Default Locking issue

Probably a simple *** fix and i don't feel like dealing with it when i rarely drive this car but i am curious. Parents commute in my old 93 Eg sedan and the locking(As in the doors) is messed up. I'll try and make out a visual experience in words lol. Okay so let's say i get out of the car and i try and lock EVERYDOOR by clicking down/switching the switch so it switches every lock into the lock position. Well if the DRIVER door is open that is the only lock that would full engage and stays in the open position. I quickly found out RIGHT when i got it home over a year ago that all i had to do was lock all of the doors then go from the back door(Behind the driver's door) and reach in and WHILE the door is closed(Driver's door) i push the lock down and it locks all of the locks. I know it doesn't really matter but it would be nice that WHEN i do drive this car i don't have to go through that extra 5-10 secs to get every door locked. If you are unable to understand it and want more details, tomorrow i'll take a video of the process i have to do to lock everything.

so you can't lock the driver's side door when it's open?
try holding the handle in the open position and then pushing the lock down... that's what i do for mine, it prevents you from locking your keys in the car

So where is the issue? I'd call it a feature. It's how the doors work.

Lock it with the key from outside. Honda has this feature to try to prevent you from locking your keys in the car. I'd say it's worked for me because in 10 years of driving my Civic I've never locked my keys inside by closing the door on them. Did it once with the trunk, though .... Doh.

Sorry couldn't get on until late, and i had to help a few friends do a couple swaps and wire tuck. But besides that you cannot lock the door with the key even if it is closed. Tomorrow FORSURE i will set my alarm so i can do it before work and i'll upload it to youtube and show you. It's not a HUGE problem but it's just a pet peeve and WHOEVER get's in my car(Well not really my car anymore i don't really want anything to do with it lol, get's beat on by my dad) they ALWAYS have to have me come out and lock it.

I will always try the "Hold the handle in the open position then try locking it". Never tried that before i'll look into it.

If you can't lock the door with the key when the door is closed then you really DO have a locking problem albeit different from the one you described. I assume it UNlocks fine? I can think of three things that might be the problem before thinking it requires major surgery: 1. Lock needs lube (WD40) 2. Worn key 3. Jiggle it.

There's 3 possibilities that were offered in post #8. Did you look into any of them before bumping this thread?

Yeah my father took the car to work to see if it was still overheating. I fixed that, just needed a new thermostat and coolant/radiator flush. He said he will try the whole locking options when he goes on break. I know i've had a couple honda's that you had to have the handle in the open position to lock it never thought of it on this one though. I'll let you guys know.

Also @Dejong yeah i believe i tried locking it with the key while the door closed and i remember it wouldn't lock all the way, but it unlocks perfectly fine.

Reading this, I can tell you that the workaround that I use when this happens is to tap the lock/unlock switch down once and i'm able to lock the door with the key. It always works but I've never looked to see what is causing it even though I've had the door panel off many many times.

Yeah i checked it out and it worked. My dad was like "**** this ******* car, stupid *** locking thing. Always something wrong!"(He's a old V8 head, like Nova's,Trucks,Chevelle's,Datsun's ect), i was like "Dude, don't blame the car when you do power slides and burnout's in a a FWD redlining it, that's your fault" lol.

I know my cousins EJ8 has it, i think pretty much all of them have it. He couldn't figure out how to lock his door either. Grumbly's locking/unlocking the door thing seems to work pretty well for getting the key to work on the outside too.

Yeah it's not all that bad, it only takes maybe 3-5 extra seconds to lock your door like that. You know what i have never noticed, is someone setting up a keyless unlock and lock? Like a receiver and transmitter. Basically what newer car's have lol to unlock and lock there door?

Are you talking about keyless entry? People get keyless entry for their cars all the time... it's not hard to do.

Yep, people do it all the time - typically with alarm installs, though. But, H-T user "angrysmileyface" even retrofit an OEM 97-01 CRV keyless entry unit into his 5G Civic - ideal for the 5G due to its door-mounted keyless receiver module.

Oh okay so keyless entry's that come with alarm's are like that? I've done quite a research on alarm's and i am VERY strict on not going cheap whatsoever with an alarm. But is that the only time people do keyless entries? is through alarms?

I would think so ... but you can get keyless systems sans alarm ... convenience feature I guess for soccer Moms and the like who don't care if their ride gets nicked.

Key-less entry would prevent 80% of car thieves lmao. I've dealt with thieves and "KNEW" a couple. Most of them use shaved key's to get in. I just used a pull out ECU chip on my parent's cars and they tried to steal it 3 times. Every single time the furthest they get is out of my driver(Rolling it). but the only reason they got in the car in the first place was with a shaved key, then they tried using a shaved key to start it(Which they left in the car) then tried with screwdriver. All i was able to do was hit there car wit a bat lol

LOL for christmas a few years ago we got my mom keyless entry/remote start for her minivan from Car Toys. No alarm required, it's just nice to have keyless entry on the same remote as your alarm... 6th Gen EX's also come with keyless entry, with no alarm. I also once saw a civic on craigslist with auto-opening lambo doors which could only be opened with the remote... now that might prevent a car thief who wasn't willing to break a window.
