Civic Axle - Splines won't line up
I have fought this thing for hours - I was attempting to replace my CV axles on my 1995 civic DX. Passenger side went in fine. Drivers side is kicking my ****. I cannot get the original axle back in much less the new one. Here is the amount of skew within the tranny:

I can use a screwdriver or prybar to lightly apply pressure to line up the female spline receiver but it just falls back to the place pictured. How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.
[edit] I should add that I removed the clip from the original axle when I tried to get it in.

The cir-clip needs to be there or the axel will fall out.
I cant really tell but is the area i put a circle on a crack or is it grease?

Repair or replace the transmission and the axle should go in normally.
I finally got the thing in - It required a lot of jiggling while my wife tapped on the other end of the axle with a hammer.
So is that much play in the differential bearing indicative of the tranny needing to be replaced? The tranny is really smooth as far as shifting and staying in gear, etc. The engine/tranny combo only has 160k on them.
But, I still have a lot of front end noise when I hit bumps on the road. The CV axles eliminated my roar at 60mph+ with the engine engaged. Struts are new as well as lower ball joints. The clunking when I hit potholes, etc.. Could it be from the tranny itself? I was assuming it was the upper control arms/upper ball joints needing to be replaced.

Yes. Pull the transmission and take it apart and see what you have if it seems to shift good otherwise. I think you'll come to find some substantial wear or chipped teeth on the ring gear and countershaft though if it's moving around that bad.
