That's not what he's asking, see once you have the alternator unbolted and moving freely it's like trying to push a marshmellow into a parking meter, the alternator is just big enough so it wont come out anywhere. It's a bitch I can't remember how we did it but I had to take the throttle boddy off.
what? i already got the alternator off...i just cant find a place in the engine bay big enough to squeeze the alternator through...

geeeezz people...you got this boy pulling out the axels??
Pull the master cylinder off...right out of the brake booster.
If you can do it by taken off the throttle body..that might be just as easy.

Don't do any of that!!!!
This is what you do...
You pull off the bracket on the engine block that holds the alternator in place, and it drops straight down. You have to do this from under the car. Climb under there and you'll see. Worked on my Y8, should work on your A6.

i have a Z6 and its a bitch to change alternator...did it last week... i had to disconect my intake manifold, and move it a little to the side in order to have anought space to take it out.... did it twice.... bu tnow i just heard about removing the lower braket...... i wonder if it will come out that way..
alright im about to get started...last night i moved the ZC intermediate shaft a little to the left, and took off the three mounting bolts of the shaft, but i still needed another half an inch to remove the alternator from the bottom of the car.
so, its either gonna be the axle or the master cylinder. which one should i take out? in taking the master cylinder out, will there be brake fluid coming out? do i have to bleed my brakes afterwards?

LISTEN TO ME!!! i did this recently....easiest way is to unbolt master cylinder and move it out of the way...im so serious this is by far the easiest way!!!!
89_Y_49RIP has it right; just unbolt the bracket from the block, and drop it from below.
Of course, you could always take out your dash & wiring harness and torch a big hole in the firewall.
Or, you could cut the car neatly in half at the A-posts, then just pop rivet it back together when you're done.
It seems some people like doing things the hard way.......

I just did mine the other week and i had to remove the master cylinder. I removed the lower bracket and it still wouldnt come down past the axle, kept hitting that rubber dount on the axle......
Now i gotta do it again cause my high output alt is back from the shop
What a pain in my ****.
It is larger than a stock si alt, so i dont think it will work, but hell i am willing to try again to avoid having to remove the master cyl.

when they say disconect the master cylinder, they dont mean disconecting the brake lines. Just take off the (2) 12mm bolts that holds the Master Cylinder assembly on to the brake booster, after that pull back a little (you should hear a light release of air). Then carefuly bend the unit slightly upward and a little towards the drivers side fender. Just dont bend the lines at a 90 degree angle or anything and you'll be straight. When re-installing, connect everything back and pump your brake pedal to build up pressure again. Should take you 10 min to get the alt. out & back in.
good luck
good luck
I tried that and it wouldnt fit. Like i said its not the stock alt. It is a larger one.....
I was pulling the hell out of the master cylinder and it wouldnt give me enough room to put it in. I wish it would though, it would save me soooo much time...
