I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the ecu. He said probly one from the market would cost a good 1600 but im wondering if it has to be a specific code to each ecu for each integ. Because i dont want to buy a ecu that isnt for my integ

Nope just buy an obd2a gsr ecu. Shouldn't cost more than $100 used.

What exactly is happening, [or not happening] with the car?

Please don't just say it will not start, try to be specific,

Although ECU/ECMs do go bad, there are 101 other things that could be the problem.

I just don't trust a mechanic that tells you the ECU is the problem and it will cost you 1600 to replace it, as mouab18c1 points out you can probably find one for around $100, a "Computer Brain Box", ECU/ECM, at a PicknPull is only around $30...

At my location... 590-Computer Brain Box Car-$30.99 core $4.99, $1600 is way out of line, it's called gouging, makes me question his diagnosis. 94

Aren't you able to check for codes with the service port like you can do with OBD1?

Also is it a automatic or manual. The code you are speaking of is P-72. It is the center group of numbers, the group of numbers on the right indicate auto or manual. Mine is a manual obd2a p72.

Just get another p72 obd2a ecu it should be cheap like around 80 bucks from people on craigslist or buy a chipped ecu with a gsr basemap from ebay for like 150 and start tuning. Lol

If the ecu is fried there is no way to check for codes. The service port is only for obd2 if I remember correctly.

Can't chip a obd2 like you can a obd1. He would spend 100 just for the conversion harness to swap to obd1 ecu.

It'll plug right in. But figure out what shorted the ecu first.

I guess if you insist on just tossing parts at your problem because a mechanic told you to, you better at least take mouab18c1 advice and find out what damaged the ECU/ECM in the first place, did the mechanic tell you that?

Or like so many others, are you just going to spend money tossing parts at the car and hope it solves your problem, and if it does not work, how will you know if it is another problem or if you just fried your new ECU/ECM??94

I have obd1 so I guess you can check for codes on both obd 1&2 using the service port.

Never had to buy a conversion harness due to having a obd1 car. I was just making a ball park guess.

Op I would also advise trying to locate the actual problem so you don't fry another ecu.

I got a OBD2a P72 ecu from my 96 GSR if you are interested. Works perfectly just replaced it with a OBD1 so I have no use for it anymore. PM me for the price.

The conversion harness for obd2a to obd 1 is about 30 bucks and to my knowledge you can chip a obd2 ecu it's just a little harder and more money there are kits online. He can buy a ecu that's chipped with a harness or make one himself I bought a p28 and chipped it myself for less than 80 bucks.

Basically it's a ecu that's been chipped so you can retune it anyway you want you with 2-step rev limit, VTEC engagement point and etc. I mean if you're gonna get another ecu mine as well get a chipped one for around the same price.

The purpose of running a modified Honda ecu is so you can have it tuned to your specific motor once you start running aftermarket parts. It's not so you can change your rev limit and add two-step to make it seem like you're benefiting anything.

If you're running only a header, intake and exhaust then a stock ecu will work just fine.
