1991 accord fan won't stop running
so i've seen a few posts here and all seem to say different things. here's my problem:
1991 accord LX with 2.2L
passenger side radiator fan keeps running after the car is off and key is out. this kills the battery. i have yet to see the driver side fan spin though.
what is the cheapest/easiest things to try to fix this problem, right now i have to keep taking a battery terminal off to save the battery. i've heard something about a "H22a" (no clue what that is), or a timer switch on the driver side under the dash, and that even flushing the radiator fixes it (not sure why that would work). i dont have alot of money to just buy/replace things, so i would like to check things before i try them. any ideas? should i hard wire the fan to the key or a toggle switch? i want things to opperate as they should if at all possible.

When the fan is running while the car is off and key is off, unplug the connector on the top radiator hose housing at the head. If it's oem it's a green sensor. Just unplug it.
unplugged that sensor, and the fan kept running. does that mean that sensor is bad? or is it the relay? i pulled that out and it quit running, so it seems like its one of the two... i think lol.
what is the "H22A swap" anyway?

sweet. thanks. i have the water pump sensor thing ordered, as i had no clue how to describe it, so i was gonna take it off... and broke it in the process lol. guess ill order a new relay as well

not where i live lol. i broke the clutch fluid resivior and had to get a new one. junk yard wanted $75 for it! honda dealer shipped it to my house for $20. oreily's has them for about $30
ok. so i replaced the sensor switch thing, and the relay as well. soon as i plugged the new relay in, the fan started again. is that normal or do i still have a problem? soon as it started i disconnected the battery again (and threw a wrench into the snow lol). any other guesses?
Just me but solving an issue is understanding the circuit.

bled the cooling system by taking the cap off and running it til it got hot. it blew hot air inside, but the gauge never moved. any clues as to whats going on with my ride? really starting to agrivate me!
Not really how you bleed the system but I guess close enough.
Is this the first time the gauge has not moved or has it been like this for some time.
Do you own a volt meter or test light?

first time the gauge hasn't worked, but i think i got that problem figured out. i was pulling plugs looking for the sensor, and i pulled the temp sending unit plug. it has corrosion in it, so i need to clean the plug.
i have a test light.
i looked at those links and think i have it narrowed down to the ignition switch or the timer control box. the question is: how do i tell which one it is? i tested the relay connectors, and the 2 hot plugs are hot with key on AND off. the 2 ground plugs are grounded with the key on AND off as well. i didnt look real hard (cuz its cold out and im watchin the kids so i cant be out there very long at a time) but i couldnt find the timer control box. i was gonna unplug it and see what happens (is that something i should be doing?)

is there a way to test the timer box or the ignition? dont really want to just replace them without knowing which one (if any) is actually needed. also, with it being january in iowa, i dont want to spend all day everyday working on this car lol. any help, as well as the help already offered, is much appreciated
woah now... so i took the car out today, and the fan stopped running when it should. did i somehow reset something by disconnecting the battery and everything is fine now? do i trust it, or will it leave me stranded somewhere? what's everyone's opinions?
You never said whether the fan stopped running with the car off when you replaced the relay, you just talked about the gauge. The sender is like $10 bucks. Don't clean it, just replace it. You'll probably not be replacing it ever again.
the fan stopped running... and now its back to being broke again (running all the time). when its warmed up it doesnt seem to be a problem though. anyone know where to get a new timer unit? my junkyard dont have one, and there aint many import junkyards where i live
