While doing an oil pan seal change, I snapped off one of the studs holding the exhaust pipe to the manifold, so now I've got to take the manifold off to get the stud out (I've already tried broken bolt removers from underneath the car, but with no luck...).

The problem I have now is how to get the heat shield off of the manifold? The three bolts securing it came out easily (I hit them with penetrating oil first and let it set), but I can't see how to wiggle the heatshield free. The air-conditioning hose, front engine mount and power steering pump seem to have it boxed it. Obviously, I'd like it to come off without undoing anything further... is that possible?

Also, for replacing the stud which broke, can ordinary metric threaded rod be used (M10 with 1.25mm thread pitch)?

Well, brute force worked. Nevermind the threaded rod question. Turns out the rod is M10-1.50 not M10-1.25, so I'll have to go buy some studs. An added "bonus" is that someone broke off one of the engine-to-manifold studs sometime in the past and didn't fix it, so I'll have to try and get that out and replace it.
