Slightly OT: Going on 2400mile 4-day Road Trip - Need Music!!!
I'm driving from Reno, NV to Madison, WI. It is a 2400mile trip and I need to do it in 5 days or less.
I've been so busy for the last 3 years that I haven't been into a music store or listened to the radio. Needless to say I don't have a great selection of tunes to bring with me.
I'm asking the ITR community to come to my rescue and offer up a list of your top 3 CD's. I like everything and keep in mind I'll be in the car for 5 days, so variety is key.
Here's an example of stuff I do have and do like:
Corner Shop
Beck
Morphine
Oakenfold
Greenday
Cake
I'm really looking for a few good rap and techno discs to round it out. Jazz is good too - maybe even some new age chit. If you make a suggestion please let me know who the artist is, album, and category. Something like this:
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother - Freaky Classic Rock Tunes
Thanks

The best techo cd (by far) for driving to, would have to be DARUDE - Before The Storm
Rap it would have to be EMINEM
Me personally when I go on long drives, I tend to lean towards the hard fast stuff.. that will keep me awake.
You can NEVER go wrong with Metallica!!

Wow. That's a long drive. Music makes the ride go much quicker. When driving through the country (or south of the mason dixon line, either one), I tend to listen to Van Morrison, Eagles, Live... you know, the rock that has kind of a 'country' twinge to it, not like the genre country, but that it reminds you of the country.
Rap, and ambient/techno? I'd have to go with some Orb, but you may forget what you are doing while driving! I really can't long distance drive to Rap, but that's just me. Personal Long distance driving favorities:
1. Orb - Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond the Call of Duty Vol 1 + 2. Hard to find, though. I could burn you copies....
2. Orb - Cydonia
3. Iron Maiden!! (I had to do another shameless plug for Maiden. Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and even Powerslave are EXCELLENT Cd's.)
4. Beck - Mutations
5. Live - Well, all live CD's. Distance to Here, Secret Samadhi, Throwing Copper.
6. Brad - Interiors (stone gossard's old band. not like pearl jam, a little more 'rockin')
7. Big Head Todd and the Monsters
8. Rocky Top! (haha, it'll drive you nuts after a few listens back to back)
9. Moby - but it was just too peppy for long, long drives.
10. Floyd and Zeppelin.
11. Beatles
12. Aphex Twin (that may be pushing it for the car)
13. SPIRITUALIZED. (ladies and gentleman we are floating through space, and Let it Come Down) The seem boring and uneventful at first, but they are by far two of my most treasured albums.
That's all I can think of now. Damn, I have 500+ cds... 80 classical, 50 jazz, and the rest is everything good, not including counry OR western! all I can think of is that short list and half of it is pretty damn general. I'll look through my cd's in a little bit and add some.
Chris - Who is waiting for his drill to recharge so he can finish his pedal install!!

any of the Essential Mixes, all of those are MONEY
Also, hook up some Classical, like Classical Thunder or one of those types of Compilations. Classical is ****** awesome driving music.

You need to get yourself one of these:
You can get upto 20GB memory on these things and store a week's worth of music that you download/upload yourself. Sound quality is great and it doubles as an extra HD too.
As for a good CD
Northern Exposure 1&2 (Sasha and John Digweed) - 4 disks of classic trance by the two best trance DJs in the world
U2 - Joshua Tree
Coldplay
and you gotta bring some Elvis and Johnny Cash. They're great.

When I drove cross country (2500+ miles in 2 days

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
DMX - It's dark and hell is hot
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Nirvana - Nevermind
Everlast - Whitey Ford Sings the blues
Those are just a few thet helped me along.
Crystal Method - Vegas

road trips are great because you can listen to entire CDs at a time, and really get to appreciate good artists (or artists you like). It really is a chance to deepen your musical knowledge i guess.
Well, if you like Beck you absolutely must check out the Beta Band. I'd say:
Beta Band - Hot Shots II
Burning Airlines - Identikit
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Mercury Rev - Yerself is Steam
Pixies - Doolittle
I heard someone mention Spiritualized. They're one of my favourites, but don't listen to them when you're trying to stay awake.
