Default 89 Civic Si lost power on highway!!!

Ok so I was driving to work this morning and suddenly the car lost the power on the highway...I mean the rpm and the speed needles just dropped down then check engine came on so I took the exit and tried to restart after that but couldn't ( it cranks) . I sat there for like 3 mins with the key in my hand so then I tried to start again and this time it runs so I'm wondering what could it be ? I searched around our forums and looks like there is possibility that could be one of the parts below goes wrong,

1) Ignition switch
2) Dizzy
3) Main relay
4) Alternator

Does anyone here has this kind of problem before ? I appreciated for any inputs.

Had this happen with the ignitor module in the dizzy.
Also had that happen with a broken timing belt, but obviously never started up again like yours did.

Could also be an electrical gremlin. If you lost power or ground to something important then it can shut the engine down.

I think my problem is either ignition switch or the dizzy ... Anyone knows how to test the ignition swtch or the ignition coil? I don't want just buy both when the other one is working fine.

You'll be better off with an FSM for the test procedure unless someone can provide the specific page. It's not difficult to do but you'll need a multimeter. All it consists of is testing for continuity with different key positions in place.

Ignitor is separate from the coil. It has about 4 wires that are clipped to it. You'll see when you open up your distributor.

I replaced the ICM and the coil with no change. I'm still sorting through my issues. I really only work on my car once a week though so my progress is slow.

I'm wondering if they just sell the ignitor by itself? And is it easy to replace . I mean I took the coil out b4 but not that IcM .

They do, two screws on the outside of the distributor hold it in place (might be better to use a socket though to remove them). After that just pull the connectors off, there are 4 "spade" connectors that should slide off quite easily and one (maybe two?) connectors held in by phillips screws.

Old thread I know, but you can help pinpoint this type of problem by checking for spark and listening for whether the fuel pump primes, WHEN the engine won't start.

For example, if the engine lacked both spark and fuel, then a faulty main relay or loose/corroded G101 ground on the thermostat housing would be a better fit than a bad igniter unit.

It was my dizzy ( could be the igniter or the ignition coil) that cause the issue .... Its running fine after I replaced the new ( used one ) dizzy .
