Race Cam questions?
ok, soon enough (hopefully) i'm gonna be building a y8 vtec head to mini-me my a6. my question is do i have to use high compression pistons if i build my head? also, if i use a race cam are ss valves, valve springs, and titanium retainers sufficient enough, or would i need other parts to run the race cam?? I'm not talking about ecu stuff and everything just the internals of the head. thx
If you toss a y8 head on the A6 - your compression will be above 11:1. That's pretty high, no need to make it higher.
As for the valvetrain upgrades, your best bet is to contact the company that makes the cam (that your going to buy from) and ask them which upgrades you should look into....
The Y8 head is pretty good tho - you can safely rev that beast to 7500 rpms daily on stock internals...

yeah, from what i've read, you need springs to keep up with the rpms of the engine, so good stuff is needed, usually you do need a full out engine rebuild, high comp and all, but its cool though, i know that when you put a y8 on an a6 with a z6 gasket, you get darn close to 11:1 comp ratio
edit: aghh why am im always so late to post, ack

Yeah, a Y8 headgasket is a little bit thinner than the Z6 - resulting in a slightlyer higher compression vs. using the Z6 heagasket.
Don't know by how much tho - maybe .1?

im doing a minime swap in about a month, after i get my bills paid off and my gaskets obtained, im using a z6 head, which i hear is about 10:1 comp ratio with z6 gasket, is there any oem gasket that i can use that'll take me up to about 11:1? (sorry for butting in your post)
it's ok that you guys just butted in!!! jp
i know what you guys are saying but i'm gonna be using a race cam, you guys think that if i use upgraded valves, springs, and retainers i'll be ok to run that cam??? I'm gonna email crower tonight and ask them just wanted some info before i did. i have one question tho, can the a6's crank rev that high (8000?), because with the upgraded valvetrain that's what i'm trying to rev to. thx guys

ok, we have experience on the A6, z6 for many years.
As far as revvability(is that a word?) i have had the A6 motor for 4yrs with over 100K miles and was revving that thing to 8200 often, only on 1st gear though. (after that, no point in taking it past 8K)
of course this is all done with upgraded valvetrain(included in our headpackages)
I'll speak about our experiences and from our cam specs. on our A6 cams stage 2 and 3 can be used without upgraded valvtrain IF not revved past 7400rpm. these cams can produce power up to 8200rpm so if you want to take advantage of that, then thats when the valvetrain is required. but if you dont have the cash to do that, it would still be good up to 7400rpm.
our stage 4 camshaft does require valvtrain since its a cam that you wouldnt NOT want to rev too low like 7400rpm. it wants more and if you limit yourself to 7K rpm, then this cam is not for you... heheh.
so as far as valvetrain requirements, check with each specs and what the company recommends. In our opinion, most SOHC performance camshafts arent usually that wild and have high lift that would require upgraded valvetrain. THEY are a good idea to have, but not necesarry if you are not taking it up high on the RPM range.
The DOHC valvetrain is way different though, theres alot of companies that make HIGH lift cams and many require valvtrain upgrades.

lol... its my friends' little bro. he's doing some grunt work on the page here and there. hehe.
check the page out pretty soon. we re trying to get it back up ASAP but with the races coming up, we have to finish a lot of customers' motors so they can make it to the last 2 races of the year out here in socal. so been pretty busy.

so if i get your stage 3 or 4 cam can i use this = http://www.crower.com/cgi-bin/detail.cgi?prod_id=84166
along with stainless steel valves from crower would i be ok??? or what else would i need? thx

I dont know every single valvetrain available to the SOHC, but honestly, anything that is not stock will be good. like I said, most SOHC cams(even race ones) dont have that high of a lift so DUAL springs, arent that necessary. Im sure the CROWERS are good enough. but for $275? that might be too much.
what do yo mean by it might be too much? is it overpriced??? i didn't think so, that was a full kit of springs and retainers.
BTW what have you upgraded in your sohc a6 head???

i have upgraded the retainers and the springs. our springs are just $130. i have to check on our retainers pricng later.
my A6 head was just ported, valvetrain, valves, match ported intake manifold and TB and Exospeed custom cam.

damn, your quick with the reply!!! ok, i think i might get that set from crower because it's springs and retainers. I was thinking of using your parts but you don't sell internals separete (sp?) do you?
