Default 5-Speed Fluid change

I was getting ready to change out the fluid in the accord. I was wondering if you guys have nay tips to help make the job take less time and maybe a little banging of the nuckles.
I hear people say i should go to the dealer and buy Honda brand fluid. I was just thinking about sticking in the slick50 synthetic 80/90 gear lube. Will that stuff work ok?
How long should the overall job take? I was thinking of trying the trick i used to use on my truck...which is to fill one of those bug poison sprayers with lube then you pump it up and have a presured container. just squeeze the handle and it fills up, but i wasnt sure weather i could get that hardened hose in the right spot.
I saw other post that said where the drain and filler plug is, but i am more wondering how best to get at it. from the top/bottom of car. Do i need to take anything off the engine to get at the fill plug kinda stuff.
thanks a lot guys.

Dude, Im not a retard or anything.
I have done almost all work myself on my montero, even replacing the motor.
i just got the honda 2 weeks ago. i would just rather have someone who has done this before tell me the best way to go at it rather then spending a bunch of time trying to squeeze into this place and that when there was an easier way all along.

For instance when most people remove the tranny on a truck like mine they spend hours trying to remove 2 very hard to get at bolts, but i found that using a couple different sizes and types of extentions with an air wrench you can have the tranny out in less then an hour.

Why should i spend time doing trial and error if there is someone else who already has the knowlege?

It's pretty easy to do, at least after you get the frozen drain/fill bolts off, hehe . If you don't go with the Honda fluid, I would at least go with a good 10w-30 synthetic oil like Mobil1 or something along those lines (it calls for just regular 10w-30 motor oil, which works fine too). Our 3rd gen trannies don't like the heavier gear oils too much, and more than likely you'll burn up 5th gear (which can be replaced by itself rather easily without removing the tranny, but depending on how it goes it could ruin the rest of the tranny as well).

The drain/fill bolts (or at least the drain) is easily accessible from underneath with the front end on jackstands. Left side of tranny, and it's a 3/8" box end type bolt -- just stick your ratchet in and puuullllll . I use one of those funnels with the long flexible thingy on it and the little point at the end, and just fill 'er up. Seemed to work pretty good.

Just to hammer home what 89_LXI said.

DO NOT PUT GEAR OIL IN YOUR TRANNY. Always read before just putting in stuff.. and for gods sake keep slick 50 away from your car. I dont know any modern transmission that uses gear oil. Most call for a light weight engine oil or ATF even in some manuals.

Otherwise this is a pretty simple deal

Use Honda MTL.. IF you are going to use motor oil though (why?) DO NOT use synthetic, it is no good for your tranny. Just get regular 10W30.

I just changed mine last week, switched from Redline MTL to Honda MTL and I'm happy with it.

Im no MTL or ATF expert, but I took an automatic tranny rebuilding course (for fords) at a local community college like 3 years ago. The instructor was saying how hard synth ATF makes it to properly diagnose what went wrong inside an automagic. It hides wear patterns etc due to it being TOO slick.

I've run my manual tranny for 3 years on 10w-30 with no issues since i swapped. I use whatevers on sale for 80 cents @ WalMart

went to honda and got some honda brand MTF. changed it this morning with no trouble at all. took less time then i thought it would. Runs a lot better now. i am pretty sure that was the same oil that came in the car back in 89.
