H/F into 1988-1991 Civic/CRX: How to use stock EF Speedometer
So you want to do an H or F series swap into your fourth generation Civic (or CRX)? That's cool, whatever floats your boat. There's a common problem when doing this, though.
Here's an F22A1 tranny I picked up for free. The tranny is in good shape but needs a bath:

The stock VSS is an electronic one. This would be great if I had a 92-00 Civic, as I could simply solder on the new plug for the F22 VSS and be on my way.

But I have an 88-91, cable speedometer. I'd really like to keep my dash panel intact and don't want an external speedo, so I did some sleuthing to find a fix.
I removed the topmost bit, the electronic speedometer reader:

Inside is a bit that could probably be driven by a cable... But there's no shank to hold the cable in place. So this won't work at all.
I did happen to find a solution though.
A cable driven VSS from a 90-91 Integra LS has the same shaft length and identical gearing to the F22 VSS. I examined them both very well and then proceeded to plop the B18A1 (LS) VSS into the hole. It fit with no fuss, but the bolt hole doesn't line up (nor is it big enough for the 12mm bolt)

I simply turned it as far as I could counter-clockwise and snugged the bolt up against it, it worked perfectly fine.

The VSS doesn't have to be incredibly tight -- it has an O-ring seal, so as long as something's there to keep it from popping out, you have a perfectly working cable speedometer VSS for your EF H/F swap!
(Note that you could probably notch the end of the VSS bolt-down arm and use the bolt that way, I decided against this simply because I didn't feel like dragging out my drill press)
Hope this helps anyone looking to swap but wanting a stock speedometer
