Default Faint ticking noise

Hi peeps

Car - Australian ITR, 85,000 KM

I have a faint ticking noise (more noticeable driving alongside a wall) coming from my drivers side front wheel area by the sounds of it.

I can only hear it when im doing more than 40KM/HR and it does it in gear and when rolling in neutral. The sound is not there when the car is stationary and is more frequent the faster the car goes and less when going slower.

It cant be anything in my tyres as i just got new ones and the sound was there before hand. I cant say if it sound like metal on metal or plastic on metal etc.

Are there any other common problems known in the ITRs to cause such a nuisance (eg: a bearing, driveshaft prob??)

Thanks.

Does it happen when braking as well? If not, I was wondering if you have a slightly warped rotor "catching" when the brakes are released.

Is it worse turning left or right, or the same as when going straight?

Does it during braking.

Same turning as going straight.

Even though you've done a good job describing it, it's still going to be dumb luck if someone hits on what it is. Is there any way you could take a video while the noise is occuring? That would help out a lot from a diagnostic stand point. It's just very hard to diagnose random noises when you are not there and able to hear it personally.

My official guess would be possibly a wheel bearing. Are you able to jack the car up on the side the noise is coming from? If so, jack the car up and see if either wheel has play all the way around the circumference of the wheel. Basically what I'm asking you to do is, with the car jacked up, place your hands at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock on the wheel, give it a shake using an inward and outward motion, similar to how the wheel behaves when you turn the steering wheel, see if you feel play, do the same at 12 and 6, and work your way all the way around the wheel. If you have play all the way around, check to see if the axle nut is tight. If you tighten up the axle nut and still have play, I'd be much more inclined to say it is definitively a wheel bearing.

Thanks for your reply

I took it to a mechanic who showed me something interesting with the brake pads. Apparently, cause i am using aftermarket brake pads (Bendix) they are sitting loose in my calipers. The mechanic was able to move them inside the caliper which made the same noise i here, but doesnt make sense if it is happening above a certain speed ( wouldnt a loose brake pad cause the sound at any speed, and would the sound be more ffrequent the wheel goes) ?

Again, hard to say with out being there, but the brake pads do need to be able to move inside the caliper, they should not be immoveable all together. I'd be suprised if that was the root of your problem.
