1991 Honda Accord EX - Sticks in Park and Slow Acceleration
Not sure if someone has already answered this elsewhere here, so my apologies if they have.
I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX Wagon. I've had 3 issues of late, one that I resolved (the brake light switch, the rear lights were staying on) and two that I am totally clueless on...when I start the car, it won't come out of park. I put the key in the shift lock release and shifted to neutral to start the car which seems to bypass that dilemma for now but there is an additional issue with the acceleration. When I first put the car in "D4", it barely moves, even if I floor it. Someone recommended trying "2" until it was up to ~20mph and then shifting to "D3" or "D4", so I tried that and it worked for a couple of weeks, but even that has gotten slower. It's also a bit loud when I try to accelerate and the RPM meter reads a good bit higher than usual then, too. Once I am at ~45mph and higher, it drives okay, but where I live, I am constantly in stop-and-go traffic and it's a bit of a pain. The only thing I have come across online mentions a solenoid that might need replacing but I figured I would ask here for a more definite diagnostic answer.
Thank you!

Verify that all the electrical connections at the brake light switch are connected and completing the circuit.

If there is enough sludge/friction material sitting in the sump it can become ingested into the pickup, this can reduce fluid flow and prevent the shift solenoid pintle valves from properly seating.
Also back probe the TPS, if this is worn or giving incorrect output voltage the ECU/TCU will think the throttle angle is different from what it actually is.
Click on the H4A troubleshooting link in my sig, have at it.
On automatic cars there is a shifter interlock. The brake pedal is depressed and a solenoid inside the shifter unlocks the shifter.

When was the last time the fluid was serviced?

the h4a link is very informitive. In my 90 I had a similar problem an it turned out to be the passing gear cable was out of alignment at the tranny, there is a cable from the tb to the tranny in front of it in between the radiator. try moving the tb while looking at the lever on the tranny to see if they are in "sync". mine was totally loose and it was doin exactly what you are describing.
My issue was similiar however it turned out the be an issue within the Cable assembly within my steering column. I could not shift out of Park and when I circumevented the Shift Selenoid with another key inserted into the shifter. After awhile car just started stalling. The was a short in the wiring harness.
On this same subject, When my car has been out in the cold, the RED park light takes about 4-6 mins to release key in the ignition. Anyone encountered this?

Where is this h4a link that evrrone is talking about ....I cant find it..did someone take it down...im trying to find out what wtf is going on with my 91 accord. No accek
Leration even flowing it...then on three occations im on d4 and the rpm fly throuh the roof and I loose power... the speed drops down to about 20mpr when I can notice some accelertion. Inpull ovet and notice there is no reverse. No d4...no d3..just the 2 gives me the power to go forward. I get home slowly and worry the night...next morning I try again and its almost back to normal...slow as hell but moving...gears engaging like thier supposed to...but this didnt last to long....im at a light on d4 with my footb on the pedal and I get these three sudden short bursts of thrusts forward ...ahd I loose power again...I quickly drop it into 2 to get going and out of traffics way.....I made my back home. I had read on another forum to give a transmission a look at the fluids... it was kinda low and smelt kind burned. The tranny got drained and the fluids replaced......it worked for two days then same problem again..now im looking into maybe the tcu???? I took the floor mat back and gotba hold of the numbers on the tcu...it reads...28100-pxo-822-m1 3LX.....should i look into replacing this...do the 822 in the sequence matter..or could I put any humber in but maintaining the two series of numbers and letters the same.??? Or what else I do on my own....
