I have a V6 1995 Accord that stalls after sitting overnight in damp weather. It will initially start right up and run fine for a few miles and then it sputters and stalls out. When I go to restart it, it acts like it won't fire for the first minute or so (sputters like it wants to start) and eventually it fires up and the problem goes away until it sits overnight after wet weather.

There is no check engine light when this happens. I did not check the codes to see if anything registered.

The problem is less likely to occur when the car is driven daily, but it does occur once in a while even then.

I would start with your distributor cap. Moisture might be creeping in there and causing a problem. Make sure there are no cracks and the rubber seal is intact.

 

I just replaced the distributor cap yesterday. I already had one on order before I posted above (since it was a cheap and easy part to replace).

I didn't see any cracks in the old one, but I know that sometimes plastic can have micro cracks that are almost impossible to see. The seal looked intact - so I didn't bother digging it out of the o-ring groove.

The car seemed to run a little smoother and stronger with the new cap in place, but we'll have to see what happens after it sits overnight in the rain.

 

If the distributor was never changed that could most likely be the problem.

 

My next thing to try is a new distributor. It is a much more expensive (and non-returnable) part, if that doesn't fix the problem.

 

Wow....I think that is why some "test" things. So next time this happens, why not test for spark.
