98 Honda Accord V6 accelerate when engine cold
Hi Honda Experts,
I need your expert advise. I have 98 Honda Accord LX V6. I am experiencing two different problems (may be related):
1) When I drive the car with cold engine, then car moves itself without any need of pressing gas pedal. As if someone is pressing the gas pedal. This problem goes off when engine is warm and idle is normal. what could be the problem?
2) Car takes around 10 minutes to warm-up (temp gauge to middle, 800rpm) .... Is this normal?
I normally wait 30 seconds after starting the car and then drives the car

1) That is completely normal. The car is designed to idle higher when you start the car so that the car gets to normal operating temperature faster.
2) This is normal too.

Hi,
1) You mean its normal for car to run 10-15 miles/hour speed without pressing gas pedal when engine is cold (1200 rpm, temp gauge at C) ?
2) Will changing the ECT(coolant temp sensor) & termostat help in warming the car fast?
Thanks!
I started reading about DIY recently and very excited about diagnosing/reparing car problems myself

Question. When the engine is cold and you shift into reverse/drive, it still stays at 1200 RPM?? That's very odd. It should stay at 1200 RPM when you first start for holmes' reasoning: "The car is designed to idle higher when you start the car so that the car gets to normal operating temperature faster. "
But if it's still staying that high while in gear, it's definitely something to check out. Have you tried cleaning your IACV?

1) Yes, it remained high in drive/reverse when engine cold. There is no difference in RPM when car is parked/neutral/drive/reverse (when engine cold).
I replaced the whole Throttle body. It is still the same.
2) I have ordered thermostat and Coolant temp sensor (ECT). Probably this will reduce warm-up time.
