Default Del sol O2 sensor

Hi all,

I recently bought a 1997 Honda del sol SI with a D16Y8 engine. I would like to buy an O2 sensor for it to improve gas consumption. I did a tune up (changed spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor and fuel filter) and did an oil change and transmission fluid change, but the gas consumption has not improved that much. It is still giving me 23MPG US.

The check engine light is not on, but I was told that the sensor may not be working properly and that I should change it any way at 70,000 Km. My car has 146000Kms, and i don't think the O2 sensor has ever been changed.

My questions are

1. which O2 sensor should I change the upstream or down stream one or both? would it make a difference?

2. I found many O2 sensors that fit, but not sure which one to buy? They vary a lot in price? Any advice on which brand to buy?

Thanks a lot
A

IMO

Oem o2 sensors.

upstream o2 controls air fuel ratios.

down stream feeds info to ecu on Hc,nox,o2,co2 readings after its been through the catalytic converter.

I dont see why you would wana change them if they dont need to be changed.

The mileage on the car is still terrible. What do you suggest I do?

Thanks

Gas mileage can be affected by lots of things.

Timing, how you drive, dirty intake manifold, dirty throttle body, dirty air filter, dragging brakes, poor wheel alignment, no thermostat, improper spark plugs/gap, dirty air filter,

Im not a MPG guru so i cant really point you in a better direction then your in.

Get the Code pulled first. putting in new O2 Sensors with out pulling the codes is nutz.

also if you want the best O2 get OEM if there out of your price range the next best is Denso O2 Sensors as that make the O2 Sensors for Honda

This...especially how you drive, but at the same time my 96 Del Sol with the D16y7 averaged over 40MPG up to the point when the engine died.

The O2 sensors should be checked with a quality oscilloscope to ensure the readings are correct. You are right that it may not be functioning properly, but OBD2 computers a more sensitive than OBD1 and can pick up on bad readings.
