Standard Distributor on VTEC engine

Standard Distributor on VTEC engine
Went to buy a new distributor cap and ignition rotor on 96 Accord yesterday and discovered it doesn't have a VTEC distributor on it. Bought the cap and rotor anyway and it ran fine last night. Today it started acting up again. Is the wrong distributor on a VTEC the problem?
