Icon2 RTV sealant for VC

I have been trying to fix a leak on my VC, I switched to a Honda VC gasket but still have a small leak on the disti hump side. Should I also be using some Permatex silicone, a Honda parts guy told me I didn't need any but I still have this leak.

HondaBond costs $20 at the dealer. My question is which is better Ultra Black or something else? Also how much should I apply and is it only around the humps?

Hope you guys can help, Thanks.

The "honda parts guy" is wrong. each of the "corners" needs a bit of Hondabond or UltraGrey (permatex brand) as alternative to make a proper, lasting seal. You'll see the "corners" are a bit wider and flatter than the rest of the gasket. these are the areas to add sealant. An even layer no more than 1mm thick on all flats is what works best for me.

the rocker assembly also has a seam here that should be sealed as well. If i ever have any doubts while the valve cover is off i go ahead and pull up the rocker assembly and seal it's mating surfaces at both ends of the head to ensure a leak-free top end. it will need to be torqued back down if you decide to tackle it, and it's a good idea to check the valve adjustment afterwards. Refer to your service manual for specs.

also, if you haven't yet replace the distributor O-ring for good measure. that should keep you clean on that end for a good while.

Mark's right. You should only need a little at the corners and maybe over the camshaft.

The honda guy said I really didn't the hondabond because it should seal without it well enough - he was wrong.

UltraGrey is a rigid seal for high torque applications. Isn't UltraBlack better for this application considering the torque on the VC only requires 7 ft/lbs. Both provide good oil resistance. Is there a difference between the two that makes one better than the other?
