Default cost of labor + parts suggestions

I have standard 2001 honda civic that needs gasket(s) ? replaced because i have oil leak and need a new timing belt. Does anyone have any idea of actual cost. I was quoted $500. I felt that was exorbitant?
They do have take the whole vtec cover thingy off and it is time consuming but the belt and the gaskets + sealant it should not be so much.
Suggestions. Is is ok to ask for suggestions for places to do this in DFW area for reasonable cost ? is it ok on this type of forum? if not, a cost analysis would be helpful.

If you're looking for regional support, try the Regional Forums (they're listed further down on the main site).

As for cost, $500 seems reasonable, if they're supplying the gasket(s).

That's a pretty standard rate around here. Try to find an independent Honda shop, like here: http://www.hond-auto.net/ They'll be cheaper than the dealer and are usually trustworthy.
