Default Newbie looking for answers

I'm in the midst of purchasing a 89 CRX. To be honest I have no clue as to what to look for on a CRX. It is in rough shap and it is going to be my daily driver back and for to work. My other vehicle is a lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee(ZJ) and the gas is starting to get expensive. I'll admit I'm obsessed with my ZJ and I would like to become the same way with my CRX. I'm bringing my CRX into the shop today and my mechanic will give me the break down on what needs to be fixed. I guess I'll be posting quite a bit in the next couple of months. I do have some questions I could use some answers to now though.
First of the gas tank leaks when filled up past half. The lines also leak and will probably need replacing in parts. I want to fix this right the first time and not just patch it. Is there a place I could find the diagrams or something similar on the gas system?

Next. The Tac seams to be all over the board when you drive but the engin seams to be runnung fine. Is this a sign of something I should be aware of? At one minute the RPMs can be a 1000 and the next up at 4000. I noticed this morning when I was in fifth gear and doing about 100 KM/H(60 MPH) that it was mostly at 4000 wbut then jumped up into the red zone. Seams real odd.

Thats pretty well it for now until I get the word back from my mechanic.
Thanks in advance

as others will probably recommend as well, if you are going to do any kind of work on your car, buy a service manaul. the cheapy ones like haynes or chilton are usually not as detailed as the more expensive helms manual (its basically a honda manual sold by another company. check out http://www.helminc.com for more info).

in the distributor is a device called an igniter. it controls the tach. when connections on this are loose or the part is bad, you get the symptoms that you are seeing. if you take off the dist. cap, its the brown colored device with 4 wires plugging into it. make sure the connections are good and tight. if they are, try replacing the part with ANY honda igniter.

Thanks for the tips. I do plan on picking up a repair manul in the next couple of days. I've only had this beast for 2 days so I haven't even had the chance to crawl under it to play. Thanks for the input. I'll check the distributer cap and see what I can find out.
Thanks again

Congratulations on purchasing a crx. These cars are very fun to modify. What model is your crx? By the way this site will help very much so in the future.... well it has for me anyway.

If you need some parts stock or aftermarket used or new for your crx, you can probably find them at this trading Post... www.ThePartsTrader.com. I've found many use full parts for my project crx. Goodluck!

Model Eh? Hum I wish I could tell you for sure. I think and si. Sound right? I'm pretty new to the civic world. I didn't start modifying vehicles till I bought my Grand Cherokee 3 years ago. In the last year I have modified it a lot. However it is in the opposite direction then what I'll be doing with the CRX. The grand when up 4.5"s. Just loved to wheel the beast. Now the Civic will be for show and speed and I think fun. I'm hopping over the next couple of months that I'll learn my CRX as well as I know my Grand. Inside out.
