Default Weird Idle on 1993 Honda Accord.

Not sure whats needs to be fixed. When I start the car and its colder outside, like 40 and colder the idle usually runs fast at 2,000 rpm. But noticed now that is cooler out when the engine is cold and runs at 2,000 rpms then it drops to 1,500 rpm and goes back up to 2,000rpms and keeps doing that til the engine is warm. like it pulsaties(sp) up and down between 1,500 and 2,000. It an older car with 220,000 miles on it. Any idea? Oh new to the Honda forum and to honda cars. I have always had Toyota Tacomas in the past. Thanks for any input.. Kev.

I will say that with the Accords, they are really finicky with idling. The first thing I would do is check your coolant level. A lot of times if you are low on coolant your idle will fluctuate.

Also, I have had many issues when an aftermarket intake has been installed instead of the stock intake and airbox. That can also make the idle act funny.

My girlfriends car has the same issue. 97 Accord. AEM Intake. Idles funny. OEM Idles fine. I think you can just adjust the Air Mixture screw on the throttle body to fix the issue. But its not that bothersome.

It's completely normal for the car to idle high when started cold and for the rpms to slowly move down to 800 or so as the car warms up. This is completely and totally normal. If it doesn't go down to normal by the time the fans come on then the problem is normally the FITV needing to be screwed down.

You can go over to the accord forum 90-02 and look in the FAQ sticky at the top and look for FITV for how to adjust it back to normal.

I know the idle goes down after it warms up. But once you start and move and like stop at a stop sign the idle goes up to 2,000 rpm then drops right back to 1,000 rpm and like cycles. Just like someone is reving it and taking their foot of the pedal. up and down , up and down. The car is all stock. I checked out all the vaccum hoses and really didnt see any leaks. During the summer it doesnt do it. Just when it's been cooler out. This is my first Honda so I dont know whats going on with it. So thats why I just shot the question out there hoping for some ideas what to look at. Thanks for all and any replys.

Thanks for the help. That did work. I pulled off the FITV and used some throttle body cleaner and replaced it and seems to run fine now. Only have started it once so far since cleaning. I'll get it some time to make sure...
