Help identifying motor and trans
I am new to these civics and trying to learn how to identify these parts. All I have been able to come up with thus far is that the motor is a 1.7L, however I'm not sure on specifics or how many varieties of 1.7L's there are.
Vin # is 1HGEM21592L071071
Also, once I can learn what this transaxle is, could someone direct me to good reference material for tear down and rebuilding?

The engine:
It's a D17A1 non-VTEC engine from a 2002 Civic LX coupe manufactured in Ohio. (should be stamped on the block just above the clutch slave cylinder)
The transmission:
It's an SLW 5-speed manual. (should be marked on the transmission, but it may be difficult to see with all the grime on that thing)
As far as reference material for a rebuild, I recommend buying a Helm's manual published by Honda Motor Co. Click here and get the first one. (61S5C01)
The most common problems are head gasket failure and the main input shaft bearing "hissing." Since you're rebuilding the transmission anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about the bearings. (assuming you're going to replace them.)
The automatic transmissions are notoriously known for premature failure also, but since your car is a manual, there's nothing to worry about as far as that is concerned.

I want to hump your leg for all that great information!
I got lucky with the manual, a family friend is a mechanic and is letting me use his computer with all the manufacturers shop manuals
