Do you have to do anything special to swap to 98-01 tail lights from 94-97?

depends if its from the hatch model or the trunk lid model.

 

My bad. Yea it's a 2 door hatch.

I dont think You need anything I have a 96 GS-R and i had some fugly looking after market looking tail lights.. got some off a 95 ls fit like a charm.. (when gettin the tail lights grab the power connector and bulbs if possible.)

 

Now that my search is working. The conclusion is that the tail lights between the two different USDM designs for the 2 dr(94-97 and 98-01) are simply a change in the lense. Therefore they will bolt up and plug up no problem.
